Yellow
---
Rei's eyes are yellow.
It's such a strange eye colour, and one Kai has never seen in anyone except the people of Rei's village. It's the sort of oddity that suggests some sort of ancient, mystical blood heritage, or simply too many generations of people marrying their cousins.
Before Kai met Rei, he would never have believed that yellow eyes could be attractive. Yellow is not a hue Kai is fond of; it's too bright, too brash, and it has an air of forced cheerfulness about it, as if it were impossible for someone to be anything but happy while wearing a yellow shirt. It's the sort of colour worn by ridiculously upbeat people, and one Kai wouldn't be caught dead in. Takao wears yellow, he's noticed, and that's all the proof he needs.
Yellow demands attention. It's a shade that waves its arms in the air and screams its own name at the top of its lungs, before running around in a circle giggling. It's not a colour Kai would ever associate with Rei, who's far too relaxed and cool-tempered for such a hyperactive shade. Yellow speaks of balloons and smiley faces and suggestively shaped fruit that, incidentally, is found humorous by the same sort of people who wear yellow clothes.
Kai has considered other words that could be used to describe Rei's eyes, but they wouldn't be right. Amber has a leaning towards orange, more like Mao's eyes, or Lei's. Saffron is a spice, gold makes him think of the metal, and topaz is too ostentatious; much as he likes Rei's eyes - and he does, a lot - they're not gemstones. His eyes are primary yellow, as clear and straightforward as Rei himself.
Since meeting Rei, Kai has been grudgingly forced to rethink his position on the possible attractiveness of yellow eyes. Sometimes though, he still finds it difficult to equate the colour of Rei's eyes with that glaring shade he dislikes so much. He wonders if maybe there aren't two completely different colours, both of which just happen to be identifiable as yellow. Not very plausible, perhaps, but that's the only explanation he can come up with, because Rei's eyes are the most incredible colour he's ever seen.
Kai still doesn't like the colour yellow - he doubts anything could change that.
But he has to admit, Rei wears it well.
