Lily was very confused. She had spent the whole of her Hogwarts life adamantly telling everyone she hated James. So why was she always looking at him, hoping he would catch her eye? James was looking away, talking to Sirius, scribbling down notes, listening intently to Professor McGonagall. His eyes where roaming the room, but never looking into hers. Lily wondered why. She told herself she still hated him. It was the easiest option.
James looked around at everyone. That is to say everyone apart from Lily. He had tried time and time again to get her to go out with him. People expected the rejection to get easier with familiarity. But it didn't. Each time she looked at him with that disdain, almost with disgust sometimes it was like she was putting another dagger through his heart. A person can only take so much before they can't bear it any longer. So he didn't look at her. His heart was already to broken to take anymore.
Ten minutes later the bell rang out signalises lunchtime. James sauntered out of the room with Sirius and Remus. Peter came just after them, his little legs trying to walk as fast as they could. Lily on the other hand simply packed up her books and left the room, along with one or two of her friends. Just before she left the classroom she looked behind herself and caught sight of James again. Their eyes met and she smiled at him. It was a smile that lit up her whole face. He smiled back at her, and then she turned away, blushing slightly. James suddenly broke away from his group leaving them a bit bewildered and hurried up to Lily.
"Lily, I told myself I wouldn't do this anymore. But I lied. Because we all say the stuff that's easy to say. It means that we don't have to face reality. Reality is the place where dreams are just dreams and wishes don't come true. Reality is the place where I don't have you. Reality is where you can't stand me but I love you so much it hurts. Please don't tell me you hate me because you are my world and I couldn't bear it if the world hated me. Please don't tell me to face reality because that is the single hardest thing I've ever had to do." Lily could see tears beginning to collect in his eyes. Lily liked a man who wasn't afraid to cry. She did what her instincts told her. She leaned up and whispered in his ear:
"welcome to fantasy," and gave him a butterfly kiss.
