Itey, a Newsie, had fallen in love. But his heart was broken too soon. He loved a newsie named Tease. Tease was a pretty good hooker during the night. Itey thought he could change her ways. He didn't succeed and lost her the waves of the bay. Literally, he wanted to be with her but Slider, his brother, would have no one to care for him. No one except Drummer. Also a newsie, she loved Itey very much. She was there for him, through thick and thin. Slider looked up to her. Drummer also had two other sisters, Taps and Flame. Flame liked Itey too but not as much as Drummer.
"Snitch can I talk to you please?" Drummer asked one after selling the evening edition.
"Sure what's on your mind?"
"Does Itey talk about me?"
"Course he does." She gave him that 'yea right' look. "Oh you mean in that way. Yea he does but his heart still yearns for Tease."
"I know." She responded hesitant to tell Snitch what she wanted to. She swallowed her pride and spilled. "Don't tell him but Snitch I think I love him." Snitch wasn't at all surprised. Everyone knew Drummer she liked Itey. She was so obvious, yet it was oblivious to him.
"Don't worry I won't tell him." Snitch smiled and walked away. Unknowingly, Slider heard and went to tell Itey.
"Itey! Itey! I have to tell you something!" His little voice rang through the lodge house.
"What?" Itey called from a room. Slider came in panting.
"Its- about- Drummer!' Immediately Itey began to freak.
"What? Is she hurt or something? Did she get into a fight? God if I lost her then I'd be dead too!" Slider shook his head.
"She's alright. Itey she loves you! The way you loves Tease." His heart fell. Drummer, his best friend, and he didn't realize this. Of cour he loved her but he never thought of loving her.
"She does?" he choked up.
"Yes. Do you love her? If yous get married then she'd be my mommy and I'd love that!" The smile lit up his whole face. Marring Drummer, never thought of that either. He walked away slowly saying he needed to think.
Weeks passed and the relationship between Itey and Drummer didn't change. He had to observe her for a while. By this he noticed that she treated him differently. He finally came to the conclusion that he wanted to take the relationship to the next step. So he left her a note to meet him on the roof of the lodging house that night.
Drummer received Itey's note but didn't think it was from him since no one signed it. 'It must be from Dutchy.' She thought. They have been flirting for a while now and she was sure he was going to ask her out.
When night fell she quietly made her way to the stairs, passing the boys room noticing Dutchy was still there. She shrugged it off and continued her way.
Itey had been up there since after dinner to think before he acted. He was so nervous about this. Finally the door opened and her blonde hair stood out in the moonlight.
"Itey?" she asked him. She would have never thought it was him. Did Snitch tell him?
"Hey." He stated meekly and motion to come here. "We need to talk." He took her hands and held them as the sat back down on the ledge. "I don't know how to put this, I'm just going to say it. I love you, will you go out with me?" shocked she removed her hands from his.
"Oh Itey. I love you too!" she responded. 'Good then she'll go out with me.' He thought. "But." Oh no. "Like I said I love you but I don't think I want to date you. I've been hoping you'd ask though and it you would have realized a month age I would have said yes. But I think I'm over you and treat you more like family. Sorry Itey. You're just a little too late.
