Chapter 1
"Rachel, you want to say something?" William Schuester asked the Captain of the Glee Club.
Rachel was in deep thought when she heard Mr. Schue ask her a question about the current number that they needed to practice. She looked at her teacher and shook her head.
"Nope, Mr. Schue, I have nothing to add" Rachel said while continuing to look spaced out.
The rest of Glee Club looked at each other quizzically, all during summer no one ever knew where Rachel went, even when Puck threw a party and tried to invite her, not that they missed her it's more of a social obligation they couldn't seem to get hold of her. Puck and Finn even went to her house but it was locked and according to one of the neighbors the Berry's left a couple of days before the summer started and they didn't know where they were gone to.
"Oh that's new, I never imagined you would let Mr. Schue even finish what he's saying before you butt in" Kurt said smugly, while everyone else started giggling. They waited for Rachel to react but to their dismay she never even bothered to acknowledge them.
Mr. Schuester waited for Rachel to say something but the young brunette just looked at him without any expression, he tried to give her an encouraging smile but the girl didn't return it.
"Okay guys, that will be all for today. See you all tomorrow" with that Mr. Schuester left the Choir Room and went directly to Emma Pillsbury's office to ask her about Rachel Berry.
Rachel waited for everyone to leave the Choir Room, she didn't even have the energy to walk towards her locker and go to her car. She was somewhat relieved that since this morning she hadn't even been a slushie target, maybe because she's a junior now. But she was still doubtful of that, she just needed to do something to get her focus back.
When she got up she looked at the piano then closed her eyes, trying to remember the last time that she saw her fathers and grandparents. Rachel sat back down in her chair and held her head between her two hands trying to erase the memory of the accident; she never shed any tears even at their funeral, she just couldn't. She needed to figure out what to do, Glee was the least of her priorities since her fathers and grandparents funeral a month ago. She couldn't bring herself to sing or play any instrument, hence her drive to become a Broadway Star was already in the shadows, and she couldn't seem to see herself doing things that she used to do.
She knew that her Aunt Betty would take care of her no matter what but she didn't feel like leaving Lima yet, she just couldn't drop everything and move to Italy. She convinced her aunt that instead of moving to Europe she could live with her cousins Olivia and Marly who were studying in New York. She clearly didn't know what to do; her Aunt Betty wanted her to decide on what to do with her father's businesses, even though her Aunt could decide in behalf of her she still asked Rachel to decide since she owned everything that her fathers founded. She took a deep breath and started walking outside the choir room, she never imagined it was almost 6 pm and the whole McKinley Corridor was oddly quiet. She walked towards her locker and while taking out her remaining stuff she noticed the family picture that they took last Hanukkah; unconsciously she traced the face of her dads as well as her grandparents with her fingers and took a deep, long sigh.
Rachel was about to exit the main door of the school when she heard footsteps getting closer, but she just ignored them and walked towards her car. She placed her bag in the passenger seat before getting in the driver seat. She opened the convertible top of the car and looked at the sky. Rachel closed her eyes and offered a little prayer for her loved ones. When she opened her eyes she was not alone anymore, 4 pairs of antagonizing eyes were looking at her. It was Santana, Puck, Quinn and Sam. She looked at them with a very dim expression until she heard Santana speak her mind.
"What the hell, RuPaul? Are you spying on us?" Santana snarled at her. Before Rachel could answer she heard her phone rang and looking at the number it was her cousin Olivia, who must be at home, so Rachel answered it.
"Hey" she said with a very hoarse voice because of lack of sleep and stress.
"Hi pumpkin, where are you?" Olivia asked worriedly.
"I'm about to go home, see you in a few" Rachel said and pressed the end button. She looked at the foursome again and waited for another verbal assault, but to her dismay no one bothered to speak again.
"If you have nothing to say anymore, can you ask your new boyfriend to move a little?" Rachel said directly to Quinn with a very blank expression.
"What if I don't do that?" Quinn asked her wickedly. Rachel took a deep breath, started her car and got ready to leave. Without looking at Quinn she drove her car forward and Sam immediately jumped clear to avoid colliding into the brunette's car. Rachel heard the four cursing back and forth but she didn't care, she's done caring.
At home, Olivia was sitting on the living room reading some random magazine when heard the familiar sound of her baby cousin's car.
Before she could open the door Olivia opened it for her with a bright smile. Rachel smiled back and buried her face into her cousin's neck.
"How's school?" Olivia asked while her right arm rested on her cousin's shoulder.
"Nothing is new" Rachel said resigned while sinking into her favorite couch. Olivia smiled sadly; she knew what it felt like for Rachel.
"You didn't tell them?"
"No, I don't plan on telling the story anyway."
"What about mom's proposition?" Olivia asked hopefully. Rachel looked at her cousin and smiled.
"I know Aunt Betty wants to have a new baby, but she doesn't need me, I'm old enough to take care of myself. Besides I'm thinking I'll live with you instead, if that would be fine with you" Rachel said tentatively.
Olivia beamed at her decision; she already had that in mind, she would be very happy if her baby cousin would be living together with her and her youngest sister Marly, who's currently a freshman at NYU.
"Marly will be ecstatic when she finds out" Olivia said while hugging her cousin.
"But on one condition, can we at least use our penthouse? Your apartment is nice but it's only got 2 rooms and besides I don't want to hear you having tons of orgasms with whoever you bring in there since your walls are very thin." Olivia laughed at Rachel's statement.
"Why are you laughing? I'm just telling the truth!" Rachel said with a deadpan voice.
"I know sweetie, I'm just glad you're moving on" Olivia said while placing a kiss on her forehead.
"I don't have a choice, do I" Rachel said, smiling sadly.
"Oh sweetie, it's either you sulk or move on, I'm glad you're choosing to move on."
"I know, thank you. Livy?"
"Yeah?"
"We need some documentation if I will be living with you in New York. I need you to be my guardian and it will be easy I guess since your dad is a bad ass lawyer."
"I know, I think mom knew you would decide that, that's why it's already arranged even before you made your decision."
Rachel smiled and hugged her cousin.
"She said if they brought you to Italy, you might want to go ballistic" Olivia said while giggling.
"Yeah right, as if I'm worse than you are."
"I know sweetie, that's why mom is kind of scared since you and Marly almost have the same character. She also said that you might become a very spoiled kid since she just can't bear to see you pouting hard" Olivia teased her cousin.
"Well who can refuse the famous Berry pout anyways?" Rachel giggled.
"True" Livy said.
Olivia looked at Rachel and tried to gauge her cousin's facial expression, but she couldn't read any.
"So what is your plan now?"
Rachel looked at Olivia and took a deep sigh.
"I'll try to finish the rest of my high school year here, then that's the time I will fully move to New York" Rachel said looking directly into Olivia's eyes.
"You still want to go to Julliard?"
"To be honest, I'm not sure anymore. I'll probably get a degree in business or some sort, I'll cross that bridge when I get there" Rachel said, smiling sadly at Olivia.
"I understand Rach, but you still have two more years to think it over" Olivia said while kissing her cousin's forehead.
"I know, we shall see in the next few months."
Olivia though looking sad, she knew where her cousin was coming from and she couldn't blame her, four of the most important persons in her cousin's life died in a very tragic car accident that they all witnessed. She hoped and prayed that her cousin would go back to doing her favorite thing which was performing.
