P r e s s u r e. Clare hates that word. She hates everything that, that word means. Sure, she's never been p r e s s u r e d into doing drugs or anything like that. But she's felt p r e s s u r e. Some people wouldn't call, the p r e s s u r e she's felt, life changing. But once again, it's still p r e s s u r e. She likes to divide her p r e s s u r e into categories. The categories being the people who have p r e s s u r e d her.
Category 1: Her Parents.
The p r e s s u r e they put on her was big. After what happened to her sister, her parents turned to her. They wanted her to be the good girl. Never do anything bad, get good grades, never swear, and stay pure. They never asked her if that's what she wanted. Because honestly, they probably didn't care.
Category 2: Alli
Her best friend. Always pulling her out of her shell. Always wanting her to let go a little and let loose. But maybe that's not what Clare wanted. But no one has ever asked Clare what she wanted.
Category 3: KC
Clare had always felt that she wasn't good enough for him. She couldn't give him what most girls could give him. Maybe that's why he left her. Maybe that's why he had cheated on her with her best friend.
Category 4: Darcy
No, Darcy had never p r e s s u r e d Clare to do anything. But the weight that Darcy put on Clare when she left for Kenya was extreme. The p r e s s u r e to be the 'Saint'.
Category 5: Eli
Then there's him. But he doesn't belong under the Category of 'P r e s s u r e'. Honestly, Clare doesn't know what Category he belongs under. He's never p r e s s u r e d her to do anything. Sure, he wanted her to get out of her shell a bit, but that was it. And when he told her 'I love you' and she said it back, Clare knew there was no p r e s s u r e. With him, she didn't need to be a 'Saint'. She didn't need to get good grades. She didn't need to be perfect.
When Clare's with Eli, she feels no p r e s s u r e.
