Summary: Kaeli knew her life would never be the same. That was solidified when the car she's been admiring from afar is actually a giant alien robot and he wants something from her. Wtf?!
Prologue
It was a quiet night.
Or well, as quiet as a night at Saint Vladimirs could be on a weeknight. The younger children had been put to bed and the older kids had finished their homework for the night.
Kaeli lay on the rooftop gazing at the stars, wishing she was anywhere but here.
Fairfield was a small place with nothing of real importance.
There were a total of two fast food restaurants, two Mexican restaurants, and three gas stations. The rest were tiny diners, car dealerships, tire sales, and other small town necessities.
Saint Vladimirs was the only thing that set it apart from the neighbouring small towns. A previously abandoned brick building that was now an orphanage and home to just over a dozen kids of all ages. Most kids under the age of twelve were already adopted, the others went through the Foster circuits and then returned to the orphanage after a while.
Kaeli envied the stars. They shined so brightly, held so many shapes.
They weren't stuck in Fairfield.
There was nothing for her here. She knew that and she also knew there had to be more to life than this.
Something had to give.
When the night grew too cold and her body too tired, Kaeli dropped down onto the fire escape on the far side of the building and slipped in the window she'd purposefully left open.
It was a short walk down the hall to the room some of the older girls shared.
She tip toed passed each door between the window ans her destination. If she was caught there would be consequences tomorrow.
She made it all the way to her door when another swung open behind her.
"Just where have you been, young lady?" Sister Margaret demanded in her sternest voice.
Crap.
Kaeli spun to face the older nun, trying for a disarming smile. "Oh, just out and about, breathing in the fresh air."
Sister Margaret didn't budge an inch. "I came to older girls room to speak to you. I approached your bunk, expecting to find you doing your homework or asleep as you were meant to be. Imagine my disappointment when you were not, nor were you anywhere in the building."
I rolled my eyes. Sister Margaret was a little dramatic sometimes. "What did you want to talk to me about?"
"A family came to the office today and spoke to Sister Martha. They wish to foster." She answered, frowning at me disapprovingly. "They chose you from the current occupants sheet."
I blinked. Was she serious?
"W-what?" I stuttered, surprised. Hardly anyone chose the older kids if there were younger kids on the sheet.
"The Cartwright family have submitted the proper paperwork to Sister Martha and they are coming by to pick you up when they return from their business trip in two weeks." Sister Margaret explained, smiling at me.
My entire body went cold.
