Surprise

By: the critical blow

He'd never really ever believed in these sorts of things.

Holidays and celebrations, all those silly sort of things that didn't really seem to make much sense yet were highly accepted anyway...

Birthdays were one of those said silly celebrations. Cakes and gifts.

Why celebrate one's birth? What was the relelvance in that? You were just another year older, continuing to take up space in an already crowded universe and struggling to survive. Well in most cases struggling to survive. Stepping over other to further yourself and make sure you made it to your next birthday. Why make others give you gifts for doing what was natural. Why make them spoil you for living another year? He supposed if he were human he would understand it a little better... but since he was not he chose to ignore it.

Zexion glanced at the calendar noticing the date. He scowled at said calendar before returning to his book. Today, many years ago, was the day he'd come into existance as a nobody.

No one had bought him anything.

No one had said anything or poked fun at him for growing one year older.

No one had remembered.

Zexion scoffed to himself and set his book down closing it harder than he had intended to. Why was he even thinking about these sort of things? He didn't even have a birthday as only living beings could have birthdays. He was non-existant and besides... he didn't believe in birthdays.

Then why did it hurt so much?

He walked down the hallway, an uncharacteristic glare gracing his usually stoic face as he stormed toward his quarters. No one seemed to be around to see his foul expression and he was a little relieved as Axel and Demyx would have nothing to bother him about. But at the same time he felt a little irked as he had no one to snap at. He paused before his door and turned the door handle opening itdead set on spending the next few hours glaring at his ceiling before he fell asleep. But the moment he opened the door the scowl on his face dissapeared replaced by a look of surprise.

"Crap."

Lexaeus, Axel and Namine smiled at him sheepishly while Saix just shifted uncomfortably at his position by the bed. The fact the three were in his room wasn't what shocked the lilac haired man. It was the small colorfully wrapped packages that each held and the small cake on his dresser. It seemed that he'd caught them in the middle of their preperations... thus the nervous smiles. There was an awkard silence before Saix decided to break it.

"Surpirse." Saix said. Axel's sheepish smile returned to its natural happy go lucky one and he threw his hands up in the air.

"Happy birthday Zexion!" He yelled.

"What?" Zexion asked.

"Yeah, today was the day you were created. Or have you forgotten?" Axel asked a smirk coming to his face.

"How did you find that out?" Zexion asked. But he already knew the answer. Lexaeus must have told them. He was the only one of them that could have know.

"Lexaues told us..." Namine said. Axel shoved his present into his arms and grinned widely. Zexion opened it only to find a box sugar free sugar cookies. He mentally grinned, he hadn't had any cookies in a while. Namine had drawn him some things, Saix had gotten him a book he'd been looking for, and Lexaeus had bought him that new Matchbook Romance CD. Zexion just rolled his eyes.

"You know I don't belive in these sort of things." He grumbled. Lexaeus sniggered while Axel pouted at him. Namine was too busy cutting the cake to say anything. Saix scoffed and flicked Zexion's nose earning shocked looks from the others.

"Just shut up and eat your cake."

A/N: An idea that had been bugging me for a while now. Didn't come out exactly like I wanted it to... Oh well.
