Summary: When a relationship ends, some people move on...and some don't.

He'd known that this day would come.

He let her walk away. Didn't stop her after she found out his secret. He didn't explain the truth to Chloe, didn't tell her why he was like he was. He was silent, and let her storm out the door.

She never came back.

He'd never gone after her.

Oh, he knew where she was. He had to. He'd lost too many people that he cared about in the past. She was a treasure, one that had to be protected. Chloe got into a lot of trouble, or maybe trouble naturally found her. He wasn't sure.

There were too many close calls, too many times that he'd saved her, silently, without notice or recognition.

Chloe had moved on.

He'd tried, he really had. He'd dated several women, looking for someone to replace her. Each date had been a joke. No one could take her place. Chloe was unique, special and beautiful in her own magical way. She was beautiful, intelligent, fearless, and wonderful.

It had been five years since the breakup.

He had not moved on.

It came in the mail today, in a smooth cream envelope.

He sat in his office, sprawled out on the leather sofa.

The woman he loved was getting married. She'd no longer need him to protect her; hell, her husband could probably protect her better than he ever could.

The aged scotch burned as it slid down his throat. With a laughing growl, he read the invitation once more.
