Alexander looked down at his hands as the square filled and the Mayor droned on about the Games. For four years he had taken 4 tesserae. One for himself, his mother, his father, and his younger sister, all so that his father wouldn't have to sell his beloved horse. Everything he did, he did for his family. Except for this, the one thing that was forced upon him every year, that could take him from the one thing he loved most.

16, he told himself, 16 slips of paper. 12 more than someone who's never taken tesserae. 8 less than an 18 year old who has taken an equal amount. He said these things to himself in an attempt to convince himself that the odds were more likely to keep him with his family, but his attempts always failed.

And then it rang out over the crowd, "Alexander Levi!"

Alex didn't look up, he didn't tense. A thin breath seeped from his lungs and he broke away from the crowd of 15 year olds around him. He wasn't surprised, he wasn't angry or shocked. Even in the part of himself that he knew this would mean leaving what he loved most, he held to the truth that he did this so his little sister would not have to.

As he neared the stage and felt the presence of a peacekeeper on each shoulder, he finally looked up, and his breath finally caught. On the stage was a girl he had never seen before. Presumably the female tribute.

It was true he hadn't seen her before, but something about her called to him. She had the same flowing brown hair as his younger sister, the gentle waves he found endearing, but also with the athletic build that meant she worked among the fields harvesting cotton and not in the factories sewing and weaving. Their eyes met for a split second and then she looked down, abashed and afraid.

Alexander, finally on the stage only feet from the girl, looked out over the crowd that was his people. He knew what standing here meant. That this could be the last time he looked upon the faces of his District 8 nighbors, but he didn't care so long as his sister would never have to look upon this view.

"Our tributes! Cassidy VanDervoort and Alexander Levi!"
