BZZT!

Little Meredith woke with a start and hit her alarm clock until it stopped making noise.

She'd just been having the most wonderful dream where she had been a grown up, and a doctor at her mommy's hospital, although by the end of the dream, the place had been called Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Weird.

Also in her dream, she'd also been married to another doctor. Derek. They had a super big house, and two kids… but ew—being a mommy meant that she'd have to kiss a boy, and boys were slimy.

Lily Parker from her class had even said that boys had cooties, a germ that you got just from touching. Meredith seriously doubted that cooties was a real disease, but Lily was the coolest and the smartest kid, so… Lily Parker's word was law.

I really need to get up before mommy comes in, thought Meredith as she sank deeper under her blankets, but I'm so warm. Did I have any friends in the dream?

Indeed she had.

Cristina, Izzie, George, Alex, Callie, Arizona, Mark, Owen, April… there had been so many, and Meredith was a little disappointed that she couldn't remember everyone.

She did, however, recall having sisters: Lexie, Molly, and Maggie. Those names were nice enough, but Meredith really enjoyed being an only child.

BZZT! BZZT!

Her alarm rang again; she'd hit the snooze button on accident.

Not at all a fan of the mornings, she sat up and seized her alarm clock, chucking it at the nearest wall.

"Meredith Jane," Ellis called as she stopped in front of her daughter's closed door. "What have I said about throwing that poor clock?"

"T-to not to because it never did anything t-to m-me." Meredith answered around a few yawns. "Sorry, mommy."

"Okay." Ellis responded. "If I have to come in there, you're in trouble. The last thing we need is for you to be late to school."

"But I hate school." Meredith moaned.

Outside the door, Ellis put her hands on her hips. "Is that Horowitz boy picking on you again?"

"Uh-uh." Meredith yawned yet again and stretched out. "Billy's got the flu, so he's been gone for a week."

"Then why are you complaining? Don't you remember what day it is?"

Meredith pondered her mother's question for a minute. "Friday?"

Ellis was glad the door was in between her and her daughter because she was amused, and Meredith despised being laughed at.

"Yes, but it's also Career Day."

Meredith brightened. This was going to be the first year her mommy was going to be able to make it to Career Day.

It would be a real bummer if she missed it.

A loud thud could be heard as Meredith fell out of her bed in her eagerness to get ready.

"Be careful, Meredith. Scoot your caboose down to the breakfast table."

"Okay, mommy."

Meredith was already changing into her school uniform as Ellis headed downstairs.

Maybe school wasn't going to be such a drag.

Career Day was going to be fun.

And that was all she had to worry about.

She was only seven.

And being a grown up was a long way off.

All of what she'd dreamed about—being a doctor, being married to that Derek guy,—all of it, had been just that.

A dream.
