Rima sat down on the front porch. The cold wind numbed her, making her feel hollow inside during that particular starry night. Her honey-gold eyes stared up, a frown growing deeper with each passing second.
Crash.
The sound of glass bottles rang out from the inside of the house she was sitting on the porch of. Expectedly, the sound of yelling pierced through noisy wind of the night.
Her parents were arguing again.
They weren't the only noise that night. Cars endlessly drove by, people partied a few houses over and occasionally there was a burst of fireworks.
It was New Year's Eve.
There was hardly anything soothing about that night. Rima buried her head in her legs. She began waiting for an end.
She slipped her phone out of her pocket and clicked it on. The screen seemed glaringly bright to her as she stared at the home screen.
11:55
In five minutes, she would make her wish.
For the last time, she undid the the chains holding her back. Her head still buried in her legs, she began to sob.
It was another terrible year that flew by in a blink of an eye. Another year where she found nothing. Another year where she continued to hear her parent argue. Another year she had been constantly in a bad mood. Another year of unsatisfaction.
In the middle of her sobbing, fireworks bursted into the air, as if willing her to look up. As if telling her it was going to be okay.
Slowly, she inched her head up. Her eyes widened in awe. Her moistened eyes took in the bright colors filling the air.
Boom.
Wiping all of her tears, she managed a smile, giving thanks to whoever set off the fireworks. Her curly long hair flew away from her face with a strong breeze.
Her phone laid beside her, and without glancing towards it, she clicked the 'on' button.
11:59
She could no longer hear her parents arguing inside her home.
Putting her hands together and closing her eyes, she thought of the fun times that year. She thought of her friends and time she spent with them while she thanked them for always being there.
She vowed that next year -
12:00
- this year, she would become a better person. She would search harder than ever to see the things she was looking for. She would change.
With that resolve, she stood as she stared up into the starry sky once more.
This year was the year everything was going to happen. She was sure of it.
Turning around, she started heading back into her house, head held high.
That first step she took felt like the most important step of her life.
12:01
It was all up to her. Up to her and what she believed.
This was the refresh button.
:) I hope you guys have a great year. I'm soooo sorry, I didn't mean to make it so depressing...I just needed to make it that way for some reason. Thanks for reading and please review!
