The silver blade arced high in the air for a fraction of a second.
Its beveled edge reflected the bright lights from overhead like a prism, creating beauty that lasted only as long as it took for the shiny object to hit the cold tile floor.
'Gravity wins again,' thought Simon Tam.
He looked up nervously as sweat poured from his forehead into his eyes.
He had visions of his medical career ending before it had even really begun.
Like the blade that had just flown through the air, he was going to be discarded.
He couldn't even assist correctly… couldn't even drop a scalpel blade onto a sterile field without screwing up.
He waited for the reprimand that would send him packing.
It never came.
Instead, after what seemed like an eternity, Simon heard a small chuckle from the surgeon in charge.
"Well, don't just stand there. Get another one, son."
Simon did as he was told, but when he finally escaped the surgical bay that afternoon, he'd dropped four more instruments and nearly fainted once. He had only one thought as he closed the door to his dormitory.
'Why, oh, why couldn't I have gone to art school?'
