Death
He watched a guy from above as his body vanished from this world. He held his hand up to his face and examined it. It seemed solid to him, but he knew that it wasn't. He knew that he had died.
"Damn it." he muttered. The man below him walked forward and grabbed an object off the floor. It was an amulet. A red amulet on a gold chain. It was his amulet that his mother had given him and his twin brother after their father had died. Of course…their father Sparda. So that means……Dante.
He floated down to the floor, looking at his twin. Dante, his friend, his killer, his brother. He could only see Dante's back. Dante's shoulders were trembling up and down. He floated to the front of Dante to see what was wrong. The sight shocked him.
Dante, the half devil that had slain demons countless times, was crying. No, sobbing.
"Vergil, it couldn't have been." Dante barely breathed out. The red clad demon fell to his knees. Tears continued to fall from his eyes. He stared at the amulet, identical to the one he wore on a silver chain around his neck.
"I…I killed my own brother…..my own brother….." Dante raised the hand that was holding the amulet on the gold chain to his chest, close to his heart. "No….no….NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Dante let out a scream of agony. The ghost before him took a step back, shocked still etched in his face. Vergil, Dante's twin brother, had heard his brother scream for the first time in pain. All because he had killed him.
"Dante…" Vergil whispered. He looked back at himself, noticing for the first time he was wearing his blue coat and black underclothes. He hadn't worn these since the time he and Dante had fought at the top of the gates of hell. He looked back at his heart broken brother, whose head had snapped up.
"Vergil?' Dante whispered.
Vergil walked up to him, and kneeled so they were face to face. Vergil's ice blue eyes stared into his brother's. Dante's eyes were filled with pain.
"Dante, it is ok." Vergil whispered. "You set me free from Mundus."
"But…but I..I killed you." tears poured faster out of Dante's eyes. "I'm no better than the demon scum around me. But wait…why can I hear you? You're dead." Dante's eyes widened in fear. "Oh know! I'm going crazy."
"No Dante. I don't know why you can hear me, and I don't know how long I'll be here," Vergil looked back at his hand. It was begging to fade. A small voice summoned him to heaven, but he didn't want to go just yet. ", but please, don't be so sad. Thank you."
Dante felt two cold arms wrap around him in a hug.
"You have always been my best friend. Please, don't give up when I leave." Vergil's voice grew faint. Dante had to strain his ears to listen. "I will always be here to help. And Dante," nothing more than a whisper now, " when you meet Nero again, tell him I'm sorry I couldn't be a proper dad to him…." gone.
Vergil got one more look of his twin brother before he couldn't resist the pull to heaven any longer. He looked down.
"I promise Dante. Even in death, I will find any way I can to help you on your life's journey." Vergil whispered, as his brother stood and looked towards the sky.
"Thank you, brother." Dante hiccupped and wiped the tears from his eyes. "I'll kill that bastard Mundus, if it's the last thing I do, so your death wont be in vain."
Dante turned and left the spot were he had slain his brother. He looked back at the amulet with the gold chain and put it around his neck. He could feel part of his brother's spirit in it, guiding him to the fight to come. A smile graced his lips for only a second, then vanished. Today, Dante would become a new person. Through the rest of his journey, he changed from being cocky to being almost exactly like his brother, quiet, demanding, a genius. And all the while, Vergil watched over him from heaven.
