Disclaimer: I don't own Neon Genesis Evangelion, but I frequently rent Stephen Sodourberg movies. If you're an Evangelion noob, then this fic is spoiler-free and safe to read. It sheds almost all ties with the plot of Eva and brings it into a new world.
[Open with black screen. A conversation in voice-over.]
Voice (Misato): The contract was approved during Project-E, years ago. The Eva can't just be ignored.
Voice (Shinji): This is INSANE, Misato!
[Cut to a shot of a silhouette sitting on a bench in front of a window with a suitcase next to them. The environment has a soft feeling with blue textures.]
Voice (Shinji): It isn't a toy, and I'm not even a soldier!
Misato: You don't have a say in this Shinji. There is only one pilot for Unit-01, and that's you.
[Cut to a scene of a fist repeatedly pounding on a door. The door slides to the left revealing the face of a redheaded girl. A thick lock of hair hangs down over her left eye; she looks tired in the light of the morning. The angle switches to the face of a boy in front of her.]
Shinji: They're shipping me off to Germany!
[Cut to a new scene inside the home of the girl; a wide shot with both of them in view. The girl is in her PJ's sitting on the bed and Shinji is on a chair across from her. The apartment is crappy.]
Shinji: … When did you find out?
Girl (Asuka): Misato showed up yesterday around the same time. 'Said she hadn't told you yet and she thought you could handle it better if we went over it when you found out.
Shinji: But they don't need both of us…
Girl (Asuka): You're right. 'See, you're piloting Unit-01, but they're sending me to test the new production model. If my sync-ratio is decent, then I begin training. 'Just like old times, huh?
Shinji: … You know you don't have to… right?
Girl (Asuka): …
Shinji: … Asuka?
Asuka: … I want to, Shinji…
Shinji: …
Asuka: I can't really explain it well. I just… Before the end of it, I started seeing things a lot clearer... I didn't doubt anymore and it was like I knew that I had great things to look forward to.
Shinji: …
Asuka: I can't do anything 'here.' That something I had is almost gone from my mind. I feel like I'm becoming a part of this place, and I don't like it.
Shinji: You think piloting Eva will bring it back to you?
Asuka: I hope it will… I found it there once; maybe I'll find it again…
Shinji: …
Asuka: Maybe you might find something…
Shinji: … Piloting Eva always made me feel worthless… like it was the only thing I was good for. I chose to do it because I wasn't about to let someone die in my place… I didn't know it then, but I was already dying.
Asuka: … If you knew what you know now, would you do it again?
Shinji: … If I hadn't done it, I would never have realised that I wanted to live…
Author's note:
Well, here I am, at it again. The critic of the century is back writing his second original. You know what I find every time I read a fanfic? Every character is the same as the one in a completely different fanfic. Every Misato acts like she's on Valium, every Asuka realizes the error of her ways at the beginning of the fanfic, and thus gets it on with Shinji who is always a shuddering wimp until he snaps and turns into a psychotic killer. Rei always breaks character by hugging something or crying, and either Touji or Kensuke are inserted to get either Rei ore Asuka out of the way for the romance of the hour. I've noticed this and I've made it my personal goal to create new characters that are less one-dimensional. Say this is a pretty good Prologue, huh? Don't forget to R&R!
