Chapter 1: The Meeting of Merlin

As I stand by the shores of Wales, I think about the stories I've heard from Elen about Fincayra. I long to go there someday and see Merlin, Rhia, Shim, and Hallia. I've heard stories about them from the elder of the village. I want to go on an adventure with Merlin.

A strange voice calls to me from the mist. "Think hard about Fincayra and a surprise will happen."

I think about the beautiful forests and treacherous swamps I've heard of. Thin tendrils of mist reach out and wrap around me. They feel cold and otherworldly. I feel myself being pulled into the mist. When my whole body is in the mist, everything darkens. I faint.

I feel a strong arm carry me and set me down again. I hear voices that seem familiar, but I can't put my finger on the people they belong to.

"Maria, wake up." A voice said to me.

"Sweety, can you hear us?" A voice that sounded like Elen's said to me.

"Open your eyes and look at us." Someone commanded.

I struggled to open my eyes. After a while, they open very slowly. There, right in front of me, stands Elen of Sapphire Eyes. Next to her, stood Merlin, Rhia, and Cairpre.

"Dear Child, what have you been up to? How did you get to Fincayra?" asked Elen with a puzzled look on her face.

"I was at the shore and I heard this voice tell me to think hard about Fincayra and then, I arrived here." I answered.

Cairpre looks thoughtful. "Maybe Maria got here with the art of Leaping?"

"But I don't have magic." I protested.

"Maria, I feel magic in you. And don't doubt me." Merlin told me.

"Are you sure? I have no idea how to use magic, let alone transport me from Wales to Fincayra." I said.

"I'm never wrong." Merlin said very seriously.

"Oh? I beg to differ." Rhia teased.

"But. Who was that voice? What am I doing here? How do I get back? How did I know how to get here? Where am I on Fincayra?" I wailed.

"Calm down, my dear. We'll figure it out." Elen said soothingly.

"The voice was someone who either wanted to hurt you or wanted to help you. You are here because you used the art of Leaping. I don't know how you will get back to Wales. I have a good guess though. I think you should use the art of Leaping to get yourself back. We're by the Shore of the Speaking Shells. You knew how to get here because your parents were Fincayran." Cairpre answered.

"What?!" I shouted in disbelief.

"I thought you knew." Was all Elen had to say.

"Let's go back to Cairpre's house and call it a night. We'll think about it some more in the morning." Suggested Rhia.

And with that we all walked in the direction of the Rusted Plains. Merlin and Cairpre in the lead, and me walking after them with Elen and Rhia.
