Asami walked slowly back into Katara's home, staring at the ground as the snow crunched beneath her feet. She tried to be happy that Korra's bending was restored, that now Chief Bei Fong's and the others' could be. But she could only distract herself for a few seconds at a time before her memory turned back to what she'd seen a moment before.
She had let Mako go. She wanted him to be happy. But yet — thinking of how passionately he had kissed Korra gave her a pain in her chest.
She never seemed to win in her life, she thought. Her mother had died. Her father had turned against the morals she'd thought he'd held to. It seemed now that he'd lied to her the whole time.
What if Mako had been lying to her, too? She'd thought he truly loved her. But what if she had only been something to pass the time, until he could be with his true love?
It was bad enough, but something more was tickling at her brain. Something else bothered her. She closed her eyes as she realized what it was. Mako had found his true love, it seemed. But she had found hers as well.
It was Mako. And now it seemed extremely unlikely anything more would come of their relationship, such as it had been.
She sniffled. Congratulations, Mako, she thought. You've won at love.
And I've lost.
