HAIL TO THE CHIEF

I: Such a Waste

"You're kidding, right?" Kittan stuttered, staring at Simon with his jaw on the floor.

"No. Why would I be?" Everyone else at the council table was making moronic faces trying not to laugh, but Simon only looked vaguely confused.

"Because... because... dammit!" Kittan groaned into his hands. "Look, Simon- everybody knows how much you miss him. And hell yeah, we owe him a lot. But every time a building has to get named... Kamina City, fine. Kamina Airport, Kamina Arena, Kamina General Hospital, Kamina Botanical Gardens; I'm down with that. But the KAMINA MEMORIAL MUNICIPAL SEWAGE PLANT?! THAT'S FUCKED UP!"

II: Tempest In a Teacup

"Is there a bucket anywhere?"

Rossiu looked up from his conversation with Dayakka to the frantic, panting Simon who had just burst into the conference room. "I think the cleaners keep one in the utility closet. Why so?" he asked, but Simon only threw a hasty 'thanks!' over his shoulder before dashing out again. Dayakka looked bewildered for a second, then burst out laughing.

"What's so funny?" Rossiu demanded crossly.

"Oh- nothing. It's just that he must have flown to the Parliment Building in Lagann today. Remember that rainstorm this morning? He must have forgotten to put the top up."

III: Paradise By the Dashboard Light

With the limited space inside Lagann, there had been nowhere for Nia to sit except on his lap, which was just fine. Really, it was more than fine, it was goddamned amazing. Her lips were soft and her hair smelled good and Simon's mind went blank as she shifted forward and her breasts pressed right up against his side. Wow- it was- wow- and her hand was on his thigh- and it was crap- oh, crap it was Rossiu's face filling the screen behind her and demanding to know what the hell was going on.

This had better be good. "What are you talking about?" he asked, pulling away from a confused Nia with as much dignity as he could.

"Do you have any idea where you are?" Rossiu responded with raised eyebrows, looking from one of them to the other.

"On the roof of the Parliment Building?" he tried lamely, baffled as to what his friend was driving at.

"Try two thousand miles away above the Eastern Ocean."

"WHAT?!" The surrounding screens blinked to life, revealing an endless wash of blue waves clear to the hoizon. What... how...

"Leeron detected a massive energy surge seconds before Lagann took off like a shot. Half the city saw it, and over a thousand people called the emergency switchboard, wanting to know if we were under attack."

"Now then," Rossiu began archly, glancing sidelong at Nia, "Do you have any idea what might have caused that?
