PROLOGUE
I thrashed my paws wildly as I tried to swim my way to safety. I can't do it! I thought.
Then, the voice I've been waiting to hear for moons came into my head. Oakheart! Just keep paddling, like you're running in the forest.
I did as he said, and it worked! But I was growing tired, and my fur was soaked and was starting to drag me down.
Hurry Bluestar, our kits are waiting.
Our kits! That put energy inside of me that sadly only lasted a few moments. Slowly I started to sink to the bottom of the river until a ginger coat flashed by me, and I suddenly came up to the surface. Fireheart!
I gasped for air. My lungs were screaming as I was plunged back in. I tried to paddle, but I couldn't; I was too tired. Suddenly, I was lifted to the surface, but instead of the familiar ginger pelt, it was replaced by two blue gray pelts. Oakheart was right, I thought, my kits have come!
Where was Fireheart? As I was pulled ashore by my kits, I saw his familiar pelt running up to me. "Is she okay?"
I barely even heard his frantic mew. Instead, my full focus was on my kits. "Oh, my precious kits!" I mewed quietly.
"Shh... don't talk," Fireheart said.
I knew I would soon be joining StarClan. But instead of listening, I completely ignored him. "Will you ever forgive me?" I asked them.
They almost seemed reluctant.
"Please forgive her. She suffered allot for her choice," Fireheart begged.
Shut up, I thought, it won't mean anything if they are forced!
Mistyfoot began to purr, and so did Stonefur.
"We forgive you, Bluestar," Mistyfoot purred, grooming my fur.
"Yes; we know you suffered a lot for your choice."
The four of us shared tongues. Me, Mistyfoot, Stonefur; and the fourth was not Fireheart, but Oakheart. His spirit was with us right then. He must have come down from StarClan to bring me away.
"I'll go get Cinderpelt," Fireheart said with much worry in his voice.
"It's too late now," I said quietly.
As I closed my eyes, I heard the wails of my kits and Fireheart. Fireheart... he would have to be strong to lead my Clan from now on.
