They're Here

On the Starship Persistence:

Dr. Chip Carson was sitting at his desk looking at one of his monitors when Captain C'epar entered sickbay. Captain C'epar was stood in the doorway to the office section. She waited patiently and impassive, as all Vulcans were, to be acknowledged. Dr. Carson finished what he was doing then looked up to the doorway.

"Captain," he politely greeted. The greeting acted as permission for the ship's captain to enter. She entered but did not sit. Like all Vulcans she was poised and in perfect physical shape, she had no reason to sit so she did not. Carson, a human, was one of the few beings that was never put off by the apparent coldness of Vulcans, a trait much appreciated by C'epar.

"Doctor, congratulations on your latest paper. I heard that it was well received by Starfleet Medical." C'epar spoke. It was a 'nicety' a simple opener to lead into what she had come to talk with the ships medical officer about.

"Thank you, Captain." Carson replied. Despite his appearance as a relatively young human male, Carson was not known for nicety. In-fact he was regarded as the coldest ego driven doctors of medicine that Persistence had ever had. But that meant little compared to the acknowledged fact that Carson was a superb physician. As a surgeon he was unmatched and his record of diagnosing even the most obscure contagions and genuine medical mysteries stood next to the greats, Scott, McCoy, Crusher, Spock… "I trust you had another reason to visit sick-bay."

"Yes, your transfer to the Enterprise has been approved." The Vulcan captain stated. To the casual observer this would have been just another statement but Carson was not the casual observer. The young man observed a slight twitch at the corner of the Captain's jaw and the slight elevation of her eye brows, the Captain was upset by that statement.

"Yes, thank you." He said not breaking eye contact.

There were only a few Vulcans on Persistence. Captain C'epar had few friends, people she could openly be, for lack of a better word Vulcan, with. Carson was regarded as a close friend. In the several years they had served together C'epar felt a close bond with her doctor. He was loyal and dependable, and he was never given to emotional termoials that most humans had to endure. He was a rock of dependability. In the galaxy that was rare.

"Before you depart we should have dinner. A farewell between friends." C'epar said. The same un-noticeable twitch happened again.

A slight smile came to the tips of Carson's lips. "Thank you, Captain, the normal time?"

"Yes, I will see you at 1900."

Their business concluded, Captain C'epar, did a about face and left sick-bay. Carson watched her leave. By noting the way she walked it was clear she was agitated. 7 years ago she had been very much the same. Carson had assisted his Captain as any friend would, especially since he was her closest ally on this ship.

Carson looked back at his monitor. On it was a message disguised as personal mail from a sister that did not exist. It ran on about life on Nabulus V and about some irritating neighbors. Carson had finished reading the letter and had been deciphering the hidden communication inside.

Carson stared at the screen and the letter. Behind the organic eyes there was a flash of red glow that died away as fast as they had lit up. Carson typed a reply message, using the same encryption it read.
