AN: Another attack of the random plot bunnies! Run for your lives! Uh, um, right... does anyone even remember this character? This series is so riddled with side-characters that it's hard to keep track of them all! Anyway, for those who've forgotten, this is the Zoldyck family's butler's apprentice who Killua had once tried to befriend. On with the show!

Opportunities Wasted

"You wanna be friends?"

Young Master Killua had asked Canary, once upon a time. Well, it hadn't been quite that long, yet now years separated her current self from that fateful day.

"You wanna be friends?"

The question had been innocent enough, spoken from the mouth of a child and not that of an assassin he'd been trained to be. It was surprising that a child of the Zoldyck's could actually make such a pure and joyful expression.

"You wanna be friends?"

Yet, she'd turned her back on it.

She still remembered how he'd waited, eager and young and trying to hide it, as they walked side by side. She remembered the shadow of his mother stretching over them both, and fingers ghosting about her throat. She'd known she'd be punished if her answer did not satisfy the Lady of the House, and it could have been anything from being fired to torture to being killed on the spot. Any which way, she probably wouldn't have laid eyes on Young Master Killua ever again.

At the time, she guiltily admitted, that had been the last thing on her mind.

"You wanna be friends?"

Now, it haunted her every step.

"You wanna be friends?"

She rarely saw him anymore and when she did he's distant and disinterested. All smiles and mischief and nothing underneath that hallowed mask.

Sometimes, she could tell there was something on his mind. She never asked.

It wasn't her place.

"You wanna be friends?"

But Killua hadn't asked her as her employer, he'd asked her as a friend so they could become friends.

This, she never forgets.

"You wanna be friends?"

Review, pretty please?
