Eren opened his eyes to bright sunlight leaking through cracks in the ceiling of the barn house he was sleeping in. He turned slowly, feeling somebody gripping his arm. There was Mikasa, sleeping peacefully, and snuggled against Mikasa's back was Armin, who was wearing Mikasa's coat because that same night he had been freezing, and had lost his own coat, and Mikasa was scared he would catch hypothermia. Eren had gotten mad because she was cold too, and tried to get her to wear his coat, and in the end the two ended up squishing together and using his coat as a blanket for the both of them.
Eren slowly attempted to sit up, causing unconscious Mikasa to grab onto his arm ever so tighter.
Her eyes snapped open as she sat up, using her other hand to rub her eyes. Eren pulled his arm out of her grip, maybe more forcefully than needed.
"…Good morning, Eren," Mikasa said. Armin groaned, sitting up.
"…Unnnn…morning already? Huh…good morning," Armin said weakly as he stretched his arms.
"'Mornin guys."
Armin pulled off Mikasa's coat, trying to hand it back to her.
Mikasa shook his hand and pushed it back into his arms.
"You'll get sick, Armin."
"But so will you…"
"I'm fine. At least I have my scarf."
"But Mikasa…" Armin was looking at her in worry. He knew she was strong, but she wasn't invincible or immune to sickness.
Eren glanced around. There was a bunch of kids using this place for shelter. Some were attempting to make fire. Others seemed to be trying to save food. Another seemed to have hypothermia while their friend tried to warm her up.
Just like them, they were all fighting to survive.
"Okay Mikasa, hold it. I think that we need to do this better. Eren, you listen too. We will switch out who gets to collect food, and whoever is left behind has to share a coat while whoever leaves gets their own. When all together, we all share with everyone." Armin said.
Eren and Mikasa nodded.
"Sounds reasonable," Eren said.
The three all settled in a corner, all huddling together.
"Eren…are you feeling okay?" Mikasa asked quietly.
"Of course I am! Why would you think otherwise?" Eren asked, his voice slightly raised. Mikasa seemed to tense ever so slightly at his harsh voice.
"It's just…you're shivering," Mikasa said in worry.
"Yeah, I'm just a little cold, but it's no big deal," Eren said, his eyes flashing dangerously.
"But…you could get cold…here. Use this," Mikasa pulled off her scarf and pushed it towards him this time.
Armin already knew what was coming.
"I don't need that! I'm not your child, Mikasa! I can take care of myself!" Eren snapped.
Mikasa averted her eyes, and said quietly after a moment, "I…I just don't want to lose you too…"
Eren felt a wave of guilt wash over him as he hesitated before taking the scarf. But instead of wrapping it around of himself, and wrapped it around the both of their necks
Mikasa looked at him in surprise, and even blushed slightly, but said nothing as she relaxed and let her head fall softly onto his shoulder.
Armin snuggled up at Mikasa's side, shivering. Mikasa wrapped her arm around him and pulled him closer.
And at that moment, the three knew that they wouldn't make it through this unless they all had each other.
