Christmas in the Slytherin Common Room

It was seven o'clock on Christmas Morning when Daphne Greengrass looked down from the entrance to her dorm and into the Common Room. All of the different year groups were sitting separately, with the seventh year students chatting about various hexes and jinxes they'd been given books about, the sixth year girls talking about boys, the sixth year boys talking about girls, and the fifth years talking about 'those filthy Gryffindor blood traitors'. Students in the fourth year were by the fire, conversing wildly about how brilliant it was that the Slytherin Head of House, Professor Snape, had agreed to give them extra Potions lessons. The eleven year old first years, none of whom had had spent Christmas away from home before, were sitting by the tree, ripping packages open excitedly before balling up the wrapping paper and throwing it at each other. Daphne spotted her second year sister, Astoria, sitting with two of her classmates, as the rest had gone home for Christmas.

The last year group Daphne looked at was her own, sitting beneath a large banner that read 'Merry Christmas' in sparkling forest green letters on a sea green background. Lily Moon, Daphne's best friend, was absentmindedly shooting green and silver sparks and bubbles out of her wand as everyone watched Draco Malfoy, the most spoiled boy in the class, smugly open yet another present. Draco started talking, probably bragging that his presents were more expensive, as Daphne looked at the Common Room's decorations.

There was a pine tree so tall it touched the ceiling, and it was covered top to bottom in green and silver tinsel, baubles and lights, and the normally bleak and bland chandelier that hung from the ceiling was giving off green light, owing to the fact that there was green tinsel wrapped in serpentine twists around it, and the grey wall were covered in sparkling, glitter coated metal snowflakes that grew and split in half every few minutes. The room was practically alight with excitement as one of Daphne's classmates went flying across the room on a new broom he had just unwrapped.

Daphne smiled and joined her friends.

A/N: Hello! Thank you for reading! I wrote this for an English assessment last year, and did surprisingly well (the teacher hated me, as did the girl who peer-assessed it). It's not that great, but it's my Christmas present to my readers, especially KFRkitkatKFR, xoxoChairGossipxoxo and ZemyxVsAkuDemy. Merry Christmas (or Hanukkah or Kwanza or whatever else you celebrate), guys!
