Zoe's Lullaby
I lay crying in front of Zoe's body. Her silky black hair lay over her face like a blanket. The cut on her thigh was still pouring out blood. Percy had told me to save her. You're a goddess, he had said. But this was a part of life, even though it wasn't a good part. Her body disappeared and I held her spirit in my hand. I was aware of everyone's attention on me, but I didn't care. I held the swirling mist up to the sky and blew. It flew toward the stars and stayed there. Suddenly a constellation of a girl with a bow and arrow appeared, the girl running across the sky.
"Let the world honor you, my Huntress." I breathed. "Live forever in the stars." I stood up and suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder. Instantly I knew it was Apollo. I tried to wipe away my tears before he could see them but it was too late. "Oh, sister." He sighed, putting an arm around my shoulders. He hugged me tight, and we stood there awhile in that brother and sisterly embrace. "Do you remember the song I used to sing to you?" He whispered in my ear, and I nodded.
We turned and looked at Zoe's constellation. Then Apollo's musical voice broke the silence.
"Don't fret little girl, the sun will shine again."
I joined him.
"The world may be dark, but that's how life is."
"The moon may be gone, and the stars will never shine."
"But the light of the world rests in your eyes."
Suddenly a silence fell over us. I turned to walk away and then I froze. I could hear the faintest whisper settle over the trees.
The weight of the world is not yours to bear.
Settle in the warm embrace by those who want to care.
I looked up into starless sky and the faintest hint of a smile reached my lips. Then I turned to leave.
