Neville woke up to hear muffled sobs next to him. He turned to his left and saw Luna's blankets all bunched up. She was hiding her face in them. He got to his knees and shuffled over, and sat down next to Luna.
"Hey…hey, Luna, what's wrong?"
She shook her head, and he could hear an inaudible sentence through the blankets.
"Luna?"
He looked up at him. Her eyes were red and puffy, her nose was red, and her normally pale cheeks were flushed and stained with tears.
"Nothing," Her voice was faltering and her breath was hitching in her chest, but she continued. "It must be the… it… it must be the wrack…. wr… wracksp…"
Before she could finish her sentence, she was sobbing again. Neville was confused for a moment, but it dawned on him. Yesterday she had been issued a particularly bad detention with the Carrows. She must have had a nightmare. In a more than clumsy movement, Neville gathered Luna into his arms, and pulled her blanket back over her. He began stroking her hair gently, and her breathing and tears calmed a bit. She was still shivering. Feeling a wave of protectiveness wash over him, Neville pulled her closer.
She was shaking as she started to speak.
"The Carrows… They… they talked about my dad and mum, they said they would die…. They said they were hurting my dad for what he was wr…writing…. they used the cruciatus c…curse. For hours they did it Neville. It was awful. I wanted to die."
Neville really couldn't say anything except tell her it would be okay, so that's what he did. He rubbed her back as he whispered comforting words in her ear. Her breathing eventually slowed, and she fell asleep in his arms. Neville couldn't bear to move her, but he was in a horribly uncomfortable position. The rear wall of the Room of Requirement was close by, and sensing his need, I had placed a low hammock with pillows and a thick blanket was next to it. Shedding the blanket wrapped around Luna, he gently picked her up, taking care not to wake her. He then walked as un-clumsily as he could to the hammock, and lying down with Luna still in his arms, shifted the blanket to cover them both. Whilst keeping care not to wake Luna, he fell asleep, vowing to guard her from nightmares whenever he could.
