Emerald

All was still at the ship. Kilowog was grinding logs in his sleep, which Razer could hear from the lug's door. It took all his restraint not to gag the oaf, though Hal would probably kick him off the ship if Razer so much as lay a finger on him.

His throat felt dry. He needed a glass of water. Creeping to the provisions, he tried his utmost not to wake anybody up. He sipped his cup and walked back out, finding himself at the control deck. All of space was before him as he looked out from the dashboard. An array of stars and violets was before him. He traveled through the vastness of the galaxy, saw planets here and there. By now, space became mundane and nothing surprised him anymore.

He saw the wonders of space, though nothing could fill the emptiness inside of him. Before he became a Red Lantern, he had a home, a wife. They were all taken away from him.

A green glow was seen on one of the chairs, and Razer approached to see what it was. Upon learning what made the glow, it was Aya. Her skin must glow brighter when the lights were down. Though what surprised Razer was that Aya was slouching on the chair, sleeping like a human. A machine, acting like it was a life form. There were many peculiar things about Aya, and she surprised the team with something unexpected everyday.

No matter what Razer did to Aya; alienate her, push her away, she never left his side one bit. That surprised him more than anything. She never gave up on him. Here she was, an artificial life form, commanding a ship to fly through space, and she cared for him like she was a living creature. Nobody ever did that for Razer, ever since his planet died out.

He never let anyone in, ever since Ilana died. The Star Sapphires said Ilana lived through Aya, though that thought alone was completely ludicrous. How could a mere robot replicate something living at all? Especially Ilana? Aya shouldn't even have been in his memories!

Though, at night, he ached for Ilana. To hold her and feel her beneath his skin. When his planet was attacked, he wished he was at Ilana's side, so she could still be alive to this day... He should have been there to protect her. He reminded himself of that pain everyday.

Aya resembled some of Ilana. Her lips. The shape of her face. The glow of her eyes...

He found his hand inching away from Aya's face. He gingerly pulled back, cursing at himself for being this deluded. She was just a machine, nuts and bolts put together, but why did he feel so torn because of her?

She's not Ilana.

The silence couldn't get any louder. His eyes widen, hearing his own heartbeat. Was he growing... attached to her? Grumbling, he shook his head, and made way for his room.

This was all stupid. How did he allow himself to get so weak? Aya was just a machine, he shouldn't even think this much about her, yet everything she said mattered to him. Why did she matter so much to him?

"Razer?"

Turning, he saw that Aya had woken from her rest. Typical machines, fooling you to believe they weren't alert. So much for being subtle to keep everyone from waking up.

"Hello, Aya," he began. "Did I wake you? I apologize, I only wanted to get a drink."

"Do not worry, Razer. I understand your need for hydration, no matter what time of the hour it is. I was only downloading some upgrades for the ship. I hardly need sleep at all."

"Well, then..." breathed Razer. "Keep up the good work. Good night, Aya..."

"Good night, Razer."
