The Lullaby of Yamuna
by
Claudia M. Gacrux
----------------
When the night descends, swathing the world in sapphire brocade woven of dreams, her amber eyes flutter closed, heavy lids midnight black with kohl, long lashes jeweled with tears. The wind whispers through the evergreen trees and slithers across their slender trunks like an invisible serpent. A mellifluous sigh slips past her sinful lips, crimson with cochineal and parted in a silent invitation. Enchanted by the splendor of darkness, slumber overcomes her sooner than she thought possible. The sweet scent of incense whirls in the air like a dervish, and she writhes in lustrous silk and smooth velvet while Dyaus gallops across the firmament, his sable tail smacking the horizon, his neighs echoing off the ivory minarets. The stars hang down from the sky as garlands of diamonds and strings of pearls, glittering and precious. Wrapped in the silver lullaby of Yamuna, she dreams of amethyst domes, cobalt mosaics wreathing tall pillars, and golden sunlight spilling across topaz floors. A distant swish of shimmering veils and the melodic jangle of bangles creep through her lithe body, making her heart race in her breast. She draws a shallow breath. With a soft moan, she half opens her eyes, only to meet his dark gaze, obsidian that reflects the moon's metallic glow and mirrors his heart's desire. Curving her lips in a courtesan's smile, she traces the contours of his face with her fingertips, the intricate spider webs of slick dye glistening upon her hand. Suddenly, he wraps his long fingers around her wrist and stills the movement of her hand.
"Someone had fun while I was gone, eh?" he gives her a grin, a flash of white and a glint of gold that are both familiar and exotic. "Perhaps you should like to spend some more time with my dear Sister?"
Her gaze sweeping over his features softened by the moonlight and partially obscured by shadow, she pretends to ponder his words as she brings her face a hair's breadth from his. "Perhaps you should already have kissed me, Captain Sparrow."

Yamuna — a major river of northern India;
Dyaus or Dyaus Pita — the Sky Father of Indian myth. His counterpart was Prthivi, the Earth Goddess, and the two of them were originally one entity called Dyavaprthivi. He was the father of Indra. In one form, he is seen as a bull, reddish in color, and whose bellowing is the thunder. He is also seen as a black steed covered in pearls. In the latter representation he is the night, with the pearls as the stars.
