I don't even know what this is, it just happened. I'm not entirely sure of when this is happening. Obviously a little further into the future here. Long enough that Henry has saved her life more than once. Anyway here, have a little angsty Mortinez...
"Stop risking your life for me,"Jo yelled at him, her voice sounding louder in the empty morgue.
"Stop thinking that I would do anything other than try to save your life,"he yelled right back.
"It's not your job to protect me!" She poked a finger into his chest. "It is not your job to put your life on the line for me, Henry,"her voice softening a little. Henry stared at her, how many times had they had this conversation? How many times had she told him to stop risking his life? This was the first time she had finally gotten mad enough to yell at him though.
"It's my job. I'm your partner,"he told her his usually excuse. He couldn't tell her what he wanted to tell her. He couldn't tell her his life didn't matter. He couldn't tell her he'd come back if he died. He wanted to, he wanted to tell her every time they had this conversation. He had been very tempted the last few times, but no. His better judgment had won over every time and it would again this time.
"That doesn't mean you need to jump in front of a bullet for me." It did though. What would he do if she got hurt or even killed and he could have done something about it? He would come right back if it killed him, not a scratch on him. She wouldn't, she would die and stay that way like so many other people Henry had known.
Her hands curled into fists. She took a shuddering breath as she took a step back. "Dammit, Henry,"she mumbled under her breath.
"And what if I didn't do what I did today?"he asked. "What if I let thing unfold without doing anything? Would you still be standing here do you think?" His own voice had begun to rise. "Do you think that that man would have let you live?" He was outraged now, she was so damn stubborn. How could she think, that after all this time, that he he would just stand back in a situation like this? Immortal or not he would have done what he did today.
"I don't know! I know you wouldn't have another hole in you because of me,"she scrubbed at the angry tears that had started rolling down her cheeks. Henry sighed. Great, he'd made her cry. "You're not going to stop are you?"She asked quietly looking at the floor.
"No,"he told her honestly. He couldn't lie to her. He would always step in front of bullets for her, he would always put his life on the line for her, he couldn't not anymore. It was impulse now, to protect Jo. Taking a step toward her he intertwined his fingers with her. "I'm sorry I upset you though."
"Not sorry enough to stop,"she retorted angrily. She wouldn't look up at him. No, not sorry enough to stop. He shook his head as he hugged her. She wound her arms around him gruffly, but held on to him tightly. "I wish you would stop." Not a chance, he thought. She put her head on his shoulder. "What am I suppose to do if you really get hurt one day?"she asked. "This time it was just a graze but what about next time, Henry? Will it be a graze next time? Or will I have to go to another funeral?" She threw these words at him, making him feel guilty.
He didn't say anything. There was nothing to say. He couldn't tell her the truth and he hated lying to her. There was nothing he could say to comfort her, so he just stood there and held her.
