Complicated Questions

Yuuki knew she was blushing.

Her heart was pounding, and she knew Zero could probably hear it. After all, she could feel it.

What just happened? One moment, Zero had been asleep and Yuuki toweling off her hair, and the next, he was hugging her, and the one after that, just a twitch away from her lips…

He had almost kissed her! What had stopped him?

Maybe he was thirsty, she thought. He'd dropped down onto her shoulder, after all, and she knew by now that unless he was dying of that thirst, he'd never even ask for her blood unless she offered.

She almost thought to move her hair, when a thought stopped her.

What would it have been like?

The question made her freeze entirely. She wanted to know. Zero was like any other boy, after all, but she didn't want to kiss other boys like, like…

…like she maybe wanted to kiss him now. She wasn't sure, though.

And what about Kaname? Yuuki knew she liked him, but she had never exactly imagined kissing him, like she had Zero just a fraction of a second ago.

But maybe that was because he was tying to kiss me, Yuuki rationalized. But why did he stop?

Maybe he thought she was someone else… no. He had said her name—hers specifically. He almost never called anyone but her by a given name. And something in the look she had seen in his eyes told her she was lying to herself if she believed that there was any way he could not want her.

So why did he want her? Yuuki was forever getting into trouble, and Zero forever complaining about that. He generally wasn't affectionate, at least, not that she knew. She had always assumed that there were other things on his mind than girls, and rightly so. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing at all.

Thinking that last part hurt, just a little. Yuuki had given a lot of effort to be friends with him, and he did, every now and again, reward her with a brief smile or a backhanded compliment, but she had never really considered her importance to him as a person.

She supposed she would have to ask at one point or another. She did not want to seem self-righteous, but she wanted to know, and badly. She even had a right to know, given their friendship, but what if that friendship changed because of this? Yuuki did not want to lose a friend.

I have so many questions, Zero, and you're the only one who can answer them, but I'm afraid to ask; I don't want to be hurt.

Yuuki sighed. She was in for another long night of wondering.

Why can't life ever be simple?

A/N: Hah! The companion to "If Only". Now I really wanna write a kiss scene for them! But one has to go about these things carefully. I just want some graphic material to work with, is that too much to ask?

*sighs* Well, I hope you enjoyed my "twinshots". Goodness knows I loved writing them! Please review and tell me how I did!
