Author's Note: So, I hope this story is okay. It's my first time in the fandom of Grey's Anatomy, so be kind! "Please, don't go" is based after the season finale, assuming that Meredith's speech at Cristina's wedding about 'it' being 'over' was semi-directed at Derek, after he asked her if she was 'in it' earlier in that episode. So, assuming that they broke up… I bring you, "Please, don't go"! Comments are much appreciated.

"Please, don't go"

Hope exists in every morsel of our beings, whether we are conscious of it or not.

It defines who we are, and what happens to us; who we love, and who we don't. Hope decides if we wake up in the morning, and when our last breath will escape our lips. Those who hope see the morning sunlight when they awaken, and fill their homes with love and happiness, for they know that like everything, even hope has and end.

It runs out in time, and all we have is what's left of us when it's gone.

The happiness she'd felt the day she'd met him seemed inadequate to the sadness she knew the day she lost him.

It seemed so strange—so ironic—to her that the man she had fought for, asked to love her, and loved in return for so long was simply gone. Without him, she felt empty; felt the presence of the gaping hole in her heart that she wasn't sure would mend. It would with time, she hoped, and she would eventually move on, though it felt like a knife through her heart to think that he would move on. He would find someone else, he would be happy. She wouldn't—didn't deserve to.

She sensed Bailey's gaze heavy on her on her back, but did little other than turn her sullen eyes towards her; as if to question her presence in the room. The shorter woman merely shrugged, her own face as dismal as Meredith's, and whispered, "Go."

And before the tears swelling in her eyes had fallen to her cheeks, Meredith was on her feet, the interior of the hospital blurring slightly as she pushed the pale door open, her stride meaningful and even. She felt the soft click behind her as the door closed, and another rush of tears gathered in her eyes as they met his. She pressed her back against the doorframe for comfort.

"Derek, don't go…" She whispered, her voice shaking. "Please, don't go."
