Prologue

"Up, up, up past the Jellicle Moon … Up, up, up, up to the Heavyside Layer …"

With a mighty crash, the sky split open and light spilled down over the Junkyard. The clouds unfurled, tumbling down to the Earth and sweeping around the Jellicles' feet. The cats danced and swayed, their hearts pounding as one as they ushered in the coming miracle. This was the moment the Jellicles had been waiting for all night long, and the air around them seemed to pulse with an electric fervor.

Quaxo felt a nudge at his shoulder and glanced over to meet the smiling gaze of his twin sister, Victoria. He embraced her eagerly and turned with her to lift their joined paws toward the starlit night. As they watched the mystical staircase descend from the clouds, shining like a silver chariot, Quaxo felt as if his heart was ready to burst. All his conuring powers were nothing compared to this. This, right here, was a miracle in the truest sense of the word.

After a moment, Victoria danced away from his side, no doubt to seek out her new mate. With a smirk, Quaxo turned and glimpsed a small, graceful shape of calico colors to his right. He grinned in recognition. That could only be one queen. The one whose song opened all their eyes to the truth and guided them to this very moment. The tuxedo tom turned to greet his dearest friend only to freeze, stunned and instantly worried. For the young queen was not smiling and dancing as those around her.

Instead, she was standing as still as a statue with her arms at her side, her beautiful brown eyes unfocused and tears sliding down her cheeks.

"Jemima!" Quaxo rushed to her side and grasped her by the shoulders. "Jem, are you alright? What is it? What is wrong?"

The queen blinked once and her clouded vision seemed to clear. "Oh," she whispered as she turned to face her friend. "Nothing's wrong, Quaxo. It's just ... it's just ..."

Another blink, and then a smile bloomed over the queen's face. "It's just so beautiful."

For a moment, the tom could only stare at her before a rush of relief swept through his chest. He let out a small laugh and smiled at her.

"Yes … yes, it is, Jem."

Suddenly their attentions were drawn away as the Jellicles once more took up their joyful song. Eyes bright, the two cats lent their own voices to the choir as they watched the Chosen One ascend toward the Heavyside Layer. Then, ever so coyly, the young tom reached and took the queen's paw in his. The queen started, blushed, and then twined her fingers with her companion's. And as the silver staircase carrying the Chosen One vanished into the clouds, the young cats never broke apart.
