Hey, Dad
Joey Park hadn't meant to lie to Jim and Tanya but he didn't see any other way around it if he wanted to get back to Charming without them warning his aunt Venus. Part of his story had been true, he wanted to surprise his aunt and spend his seventeenth birthday with her but he never let on that he didn't intend to come back. Jim and Tanya had been very good to him but they weren't family. With his mom gone, grandma M.I.A. and the fact that his dad had split before he was born, Venus was the only one he had left in the world.
As he stepped on the greyhound bus after saying his goodbyes to his caretakers he hoped that Venus would let him stay; she had always been a sucker when it came to him. Whatever he asked for she gave it to him. As a kid he use to live for her visits; she was always so much fun. She would listen for hours while he described in endless detail some new scheme he and his friend Shane had come up with. But what Joey missed most about his aunt was the morning breakfasts they would have on his week-long visits every few months.
Blueberry and chocolate pancakes were her specialty and though she tried his mom, Lula could never quite do the recipe justice. The young man settled down in his window seat and was glad that there weren't too many passengers boarding. Last time he got stuck next to an old man who smelled like moth balls and cigarettes. It had been tough saying goodbye to his aunt and going to live with strangers but Aunt Venus had said it was for the best.
He believed her; his mother had always told him that if anything happened to her to listen to Aunt Venus cause she would always do what was best for him. So he didn't question Venus, he just did as he was told. He smirked at the thought of the guy who accompanied his aunt and him to the bus station that night. He believed his name was Alex; he was a tough guy. Under different circumstances Joey would have been afraid of him but the guy seemed nice enough and if he wasn't reaching too far, Alex seemed to have a crush on Venus.
The bus started and the driver announced their stops and destinations; Joey settled back into his seat and closed his eyes. Something inside him knew that from this day on his life would be different, hopefully for the better.
