It was the last day of school before winter break, but Jade certainly wasn't feeling very festive. To be truthful, she was just exhausted. She couldn't wait to go home and just sleep. She hadn't given out any gifts, and she didn't exactly plan to receive any. But Beck decided to surprise her at her locker as she was about to head home.
"Hey there."
"Um, hey. Do you need something?"
"Okay, I know we're not exactly on the best terms, but traditions are traditions, right?" Jade had almost forgotten. Every year on the last day before winter break, they would go out to their favorite café and share some peppermint hot chocolates.
"Oh, it's okay, I mean I'm really tired and everything—"
"It's on me. Come on, Jade, it's Christmas. Well, almost." He chuckled. She hated that she still couldn't resist that smile.
"Okay, but if they don't have my flavored whipped cream anymore, I'm out of there." Jade slammed her locker and they left school on the way to the café.
Jade and Beck finally sat down at a small table by the window with their hot chocolate. Jade was happy they still had her favorite whipped cream; it seemed like Beck was, too. She took in the atmosphere of the little coffeehouse. It didn't seem like it had been a whole year since they were last here, sitting across from each other with their peppermint hot chocolate, completely smitten. A lot had changed since then, but it didn't seem like it.
For a while they didn't even say much. They just sipped their drinks, occasionally smiling at each other—but not for more than a few seconds, of course. Beck finally broke the silence.
"So what are you doing for the holidays?"
"Oh, you know. Just watching my favorite movie ever, The Search for Santa Paws." She said sarcastically. Beck laughed.
"That's the Jade I know and love." He didn't even realize what he had just said until a few seconds later, but oddly enough, he wasn't even embarrassed. There was a bit of an awkward silence, but Jade just smiled. "Still the same old me." Beck couldn't help but feel like everything was back to normal. This all felt normal—just sitting here in the café, enjoying each other's company. He knew they weren't back together, but could this be the start of something again? Right now, he didn't really want to worry about any of that. All he cared about was the lovely girl in front of him and how this peppermint hot chocolate had never tasted to wonderful.
