This Is Real

Dean lay under the Impala, breathing in its greasy essence.

With a grunt, he pushed a spring into place, completing the repair. The feel of the cool metal on his hands and the accomplishment of a job well done made him think, this is real. He lay there, in the hard dirt, feeling secure as a child with their favorite blanket. He stared up at the underbelly of his baby, contemplating.

Monsters are real. But the rest of the world has a different reality – safety, love, soccer games, barbeques.

Dean closed his eyes, knowing he was sheltered, and slept.
