I. You can stand under my umbrella
Luna smiled as she opened her umbrella.
She was in the Great Hall, and it was raining. She was dry, but you never knew what could happen if you didn't protect yourself. Life was full of surprises sometimes.
"Hey, Loony," someone called, "can I use your umbrella?" There was laughter.
"Yeah, since it's raining so hard—outside." More laughter.
Luna simply hummed to herself. "You can share. I don't mind." Her dreamy voice was unmarred and unaffected by the taunts. She tuned them out and instead smiled up at her umbrella.
"Thanks," someone said softly. Neville stood next to her.
II. Would you lay with me and just forget the world?
"I, Luna Anya Lovegood, swear to be faithful and loving until death. I swear to never lie to my husband. I swear never to leave, never to hurt, and never, ever to forget. I do."
Her husband smiled broadly at her. He began his vows, but she missed the beginning as she studied his beautiful, perfect features. This was the very best choice of her life—not a bone in her body was afraid or ambivalent.
"I promise to never remember. I promise to forget the world and remember only my Luna. I do."
"You may now kiss the bride."
III. As long as you're living my baby you'll be
"Daddy!" Luna cried, running towards him. Her first year at Hogwarts had been quite interesting, though she'd always had to be on her guard—things were lurking in Hogwarts corridors. And not to mention the basilisk…
But now she was in her father's arms, laughing joyously. "I missed you!"
"Oh, my Luna, I missed you too…"
The sky was darkening, clouds threatening. Luna's father pulled out on of those drink-umbrellas and opened it, sending it up to the sky—"To keep the storm away," he explained to his curious daughter.
It was good to be back in her father's arms.
IV. And our friends are all on board, many more of them live next door.
She'd never been happier to be alive. Dumbledore's Army was fighting. She had friends.
Painting them had been a challenge, and she and her father were unsure how to safely charm them to move—so they didn't. But she was a good painter, just like her mother.
Neville—Ginny—Harry—Ron—Hermione. Her friends.
It came as a surprise, as a shock. To be called someone's friend, to be able to hug and confide in them, to be able to laugh with them.
Being part of a group helped everything. Dumbledore's Army got her even more friends.
She loved friendship.
V. Life is like a gift, they say, wrapped up for you every day.
She wore a flower in her hair the day she graduated from Hogwarts.
She wore a flower in her hair the day she got married.
She wore a flower in her hair the day her first book was published (Nargles: The Truth).
She wore a flower in her hair the day she gave birth—though of course it fell out.
She wore a flower in her hair when she was buried. Flowers signified her. They were her symbol, and anyone who knew her knew that. Flowers meant everything to her.
And every day, one new flower appeared on her grave.
A/N: This is for both the Surprise Challenge and the (other) Nature Challenge. This is dedicated to the many Luna-lovers out there! (Notice how I didn't use Luna's husband's name? How diplomatic I am! LOL.) Each drabble is exactly 100 words—now that was a challenge!
The songs were, in order—
I. Umbrella by Rihana
II. Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
III. (Okay, so this one is from the book 'I Love You Forever', a picture book from my childhood.)
IV. Yellow Submarine by the Beatles
V. Ordinary Miracle by Sarah McLauchlan
I don't claim to own any part of these songs or these characters.
A special thanks to Pinky Green and Cuban Sombrero Gal, the challenge writers!
Thanks for reading, and please drop a review!
