Clare sighed as she stared blankly at the clock. It was almost as if it were taunting her. Just hearing it tick disgusted her. It actually became a routine, staring at the clock. Ever since the day Clare entered the hospital that's all she could ever do. Stare and wait. Wait for the day she could finally be with Eli. But Clare knew that day was going to come soon. She could feel her body becoming weaker every day. As she sat there, Clare started to recall the day she found out she had breast cancer.
Clare could feel the palms of her hands start to get sweaty. She knew when the doctor came back with the results, it could only be bad news.
"I have some bad news Ms. Edwards, the doctor said. Well, the results show that you have cancer. Breast cancer to be exact. I'm sorry to say this but..." the doctor trailed off.
"But?" Clare questioned worried.
"Well, you've already gone too far without treatment. I'm afraid it's too late."
Clare felt a single tear run down her cheek. "How long do I have left to...live?"
"I would say somewhere between one to two months." With that, Clare walked out crying, never looking back.
Clare still shed a tear remembering that painful moment. Suddenly, she started to remember another heartbreaking moment in her life. The day Eli left to go to war.
For once in Clare's life, she was happy. She and Eli got married, they bought the perfect house, and they were even thinking about having kids. Nothing could ruin Clare's life...or so she thought.
Clare and Eli were about to watch a movie, so they were getting everything ready. Before they even started watching the movie, Eli said he had something important to say.
"Clare, I have to tell you something." Eli said. "It's not easy for me to say this, but I joined the army."
Clare felt as if her whole world came crashing down. "When do you leave?" she managed to choke out.
"In two weeks."
Instead of watching the movie that night, they held each other in their arms, cherishing the time they had together.
The following week...
Clare dreaded this day. Soon, Eli would be gone, leaving Clare alone. Once they arrived at the airport, Clare started crying like crazy.
"Clare, it's going to be okay." Eli said as they were saying their goodbyes.
"Eli, I want you to promise me something. I want you to promise that you'll come back."
"I promise, Blue Eyes."
Eli broke his promise. He never came back. Clare always wondered how a widow would feel and now, she finally knows. As Clare sat there in her hospital bed, she suddenly had trouble breathing. Soon, a bunch of nurses came rushing in. Clare knew it was time. As Clare lost consciousness, she began to see a figure coming towards her.
"Good to see you again, Blue Eyes." Eli said as he reached out his hand for Clare's.
Clare took his hand and never looked back. The day Clare waited for has finally come.
