A little GaaSaku lovin', not my fav pairing anymore. But, I wrote this way back when a thought I'd submit it!
Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, or Sakura would run to Gaara after Naruto runs away with Sasuke! sighs
Not Sasuke
Sakura's eyes shot open in the dark room. She realized the images around her were blurred by the fact that her eyes were damp with tears. Her hand stroked across her eyes slowly making them clearer. When she looked around the room she finally remembered she was in Suna. The sound of Naruto shifting to her right confirmed that she was indeed on a mission in the sandy village. Sakura wondered if she had woken her teammate, but he grunted and mumbled something about ramen so she figured he was undisturbed.
She stood and made her way sleepily to the large windows of the tower her team was occupying. Placing her hand on the cool glass she tried to remember what had happened in her sleep to wake her. As she gazed over the sleeping desert one word came to her mind, Sasuke. Just his name made her emerald eyes sting, she slid them shut to keep any more tears from falling. I've lived without him for so long. Why is it hitting me so hard now?!
The door sliding shut signaled to her that someone had entered, but she wasn't in the mood for company. She didn't realize she'd spoken Sasuke's name out loud, so she was surprised when the intruder spoke back, "Why do you care for someone who left you?" Her eyes opened as she recognized the voice.
"Gaara…I'm sorry. Did I wake you?" Sakura stared at her bare feet, allowing her pink hair to fall in front of her face; she was avoiding answering his question. A small part of her even wanted the redheaded Kazekage to just turn around and walk away, to leave her alone Just like Sasuke.
Gaara reached a hand out to catch a tear before it hit the ground. It seemed to glow as the moon's light reflected off of it; then it disappeared. When she looked up at him, he could tell from her expression the tears had sprung unbidden. The tears in her eyes set off the same sad glow as the lone one that had fallen to his hand. Emotions were not his best subject, but her sadness nearly bore its weight upon his gentle heart. The years past had softened his heart and he had known such pain himself. He could not stand this any longer.
In one fluid motion she was swept into a tight, awkward hug. Gaara held her as if he was forced to, but then again it was not an easily done thing for him. "I am sorry that I cannot be the Uchiha," his voice was soft and slightly pained. After this was said, his arms relaxed into a gentle hug. Sakura was very surprised by his actions; she thought she might have been dreaming. If I am…Please don't wake up… Her arms rose to wrap around his torso, he stiffened slightly. When she rested her head lightly on his chest she was soon lulled to sleep by his steady heartbeat.
Gaara set her softly down beside Naruto, a peaceful expression on her face. Bending down he brushed a lock of her cherry blossom hair from her eyes. He stood silently; stopping at the door he looked back, "How could he have left her like that?" The door pressed shut softly behind him.
She watched him go, eyes sleepily half-lidded. You're not and never will be Sasuke…and I hope it stays that way… She drifted back into a soft slumber, a gentle smile gracing her features.
