The Beast That Hath No Name
As soon as she hears a bump, the car comes to a complete stop.
She wakes him up, not to switch drivers, but to alert him of what the car had just come in contact with.
The two don't hesitate in checking it out, and once they do, she is the first to react. She cringes away in disgust, immediately labeling herself a hypocrite, for she refused to look at it despite it being one of Mother Nature's gifts.
The number she had done on it was all too much for her eyes.
She inhales, and looks at it, taking in the damage she had caused. The poor creature was just at the wrong place and at the wrong time.
She kneels down, being careful not to touch the fluids he had released upon impact. Dawn can think of nothing at the moment but taking him to a hospital to get healed, anyway to ensure that he doesn't stay in that condition forever.
It's already too late for that though, his frozen, shocked eyes do nothing but confirm his status.
Not to mention that they're in a practically empty highway in the middle of scenic nowhere.
He kneels down too, and closes his eyes so he can rest in peace. He notices that she's still distraught, that she considers herself a monster who kills what she's supposed to protect.
He doesn't want her to continue berating herself, so he does the least he can do for her. He digs the animal a proper grave, and places him in it. Now his corpse will surely be clear from receiving any further scarring from other incoming vehicles.
She thanks him for the act and tops it off by scrawling up an artificial tombstone. B assists her by finding a thick stick, which he uses to impale both it and the notebook paper into the ground right behind the grave.
The funeral is completed after she recites some cryptic lore concerning the balance between life and death. (Stuff which he personally finds both beautiful and surreal.) The two figure that it's time to get back on the road, so she stands up on the tip of her toes to give him a peck for helping her, "Thank you." and heads back to the car.
He shrugs, it wasn't all him really. Before he leaves, he takes one final look at the grave. It looks pretty nice and respectable for what little material he had to work with, even the sharpie handwriting wasn't too shabby..
"Here lies one of the Earth's most treasured gifts. Squirrel by nature, curiosity adrift."
