Chapter 2
I lay in my bed thinking about what Spencer had just told me. I wonder if they are really going to drop my charges. That would be amazing. I could finally walk around as a free man. I hear my door creak open and I open my eyes. In my doorway stands Jenna. A sick feeling crept up in my stomach.
"Hi Toby." She says.
"Hi." I say back.
"My dad is out of town and your mom is at a banquet. They won't be home until late." She says as she walks over to me. I jump off of my bed.
"I can't tonight. I have to go somewhere." I lie to her.
"Where? You never go anywhere."
" Well I have somewhere I have to go tonight." I say. I grab my coat and walk out of the house. I walk down the street with nowhere to go.
I find myself standing in front of Spencer's house. I find my way around the back yard, trying to hide. There is a light on in the living room and I see Spencer sitting on the couch playing on her laptop. I look around and I don't see anyone else so I knock on the door. She looks over startled and then smiles.
"Toby. What are you doing here?" she asks as she opens the door.
"I needed to get out of the house. I had no where else to go." I tell her.
We sit on her couch talking about her parents and how they ignore her.
"Where are they right now?" I ask her.
"They are out of town. New York I think." She says. "I have the house to myself."
"You have the whole house to yourself? That must be scary." I say.
"Yeah. It can be. Ever since…" she stops. "So why did you have to get out of the house?"
I looked at her and just sat in silence. What was I supposed to say?
"Jenna was…getting annoying." I tell her.
"Really? That's it?" she says.
I nod my head.
"How about I tell you why I am afraid to stay here alone and you tell me the real reason you wanted to leave your house." She says.
I take in a deep breath. "Okay."
