Severus eyed the man cowering before him with revulsion. "My Lord, surely the rat would be of more assistance if he stayed with Bellatrix?" Voldemort looked at Snape. "Are you refusing a gift from your master, Severus? Surely, you would not be so ungrateful. No matter, I won't think of giving you of giving you gifts again." He spoke menacingly, while stroking Nagini with a long white finger.
Snape, realizing the danger that he was in, quickly backtracked. "Of course not, my Lord. I was merely suggesting-"
"Yes. Well, don't suggest. You are to take care of the rat and that is final." His voice dared Snape to rebel against him. But Severus did not take the bait. "As you wish, my Lord." With a sardonic incline of his head towards Voldemort, he kicked Pettigrew in the ribs. "Come."
With a last look at Voldemort, he strode from the room, Pettigrew scurrying after him.
"I don't appreciate you calling me a rat, Snivellus." Peter made an attempt at sticking up for himself later, in Spinners End. Snape twisted in his seat, his face a portrait of fury. He spoke in a quiet voice. "Obviously, I can call you whatever I want. You are in my house. If you were to have some kind of horrible accident, then the Dark Lord would probably thank me for it." He rose from his chair, towering over Wormtail. "You are nothing but vermin. In every sense of the word. Also, I think that you gave up whatever right you had to address me as Snivellus when you betrayed your friends, the murderous piece of filth that you are.
Later, when Severus was alone in his room, hatred flowing through his veins, filling his whole body with bile, it took all of his restraint not to go out there and make Pettigrew pay. To make him pay....
Lily would be alive were it not for the rat. All the fury and rage slowly dissipated and was replaced by a dull, throbbing ache. Memories of Lily Evans flashed through his mind.
Lily on the day that he had first seen her, Lily's face when she first saw the Hogwarts Express, the shock and dismay he had felt when he realized that his Lily Evans was to become Lily Potter and, finally, the absolute agony that he felt when he realized that he had sentenced her to death. But still, he believed that she would be okay, that Dumbledore would save her. Lily would have been safe, if not for that piece of scum sitting in the next room. Yet, that piece of scum had been trusted by her when she could not, would not trust Severus. She had died hating Severus.
He would not rest until the Dark Lord and Pettigrew knew what they had done by killing his Lily Evans. They would pay for it. However, he wouldn't ever be free of the crippling guilt and remorse. That would remain with him until the end of his days.
