'Alert me immediately if you need anything'

'We will be fine James. It's only for a couple of hours'

'Just promise me'

'Okay, but really Bella has been feeling better since yesterday…and I've almost recovered'

James Potter sighed as he gazed down at his wife's sparkling face. Lily did look fine but something has been nagging at the back of his mind all day, some indecipherable feeling telling him…that's it, he didn't know what it was telling. It made him uncomfortable to leave his wife and daughter alone, so soon after the birth of his newborn daughter but as Lily kept reminding him, there were under the most stringent security measures. Designed by Dumbledore himself and his upholded by his best friends…And he had been promising his son this game for ages, ever since Lily's pregnancy incapacitated them from pretty much doing anything.

Bella's wailing broke through his thoughts and he followed his wife as she bustled into the nursery. It was an airy, cheerful room with light coloured walls. Littered with various presents, baby supplies, ornate furniture and other decorations, it provided a welcoming contrast to the gloomy world they had been living in. But nothing brought a smile to his face more than the white intricate crib in the middle of the room and its beautiful occupant, his daughter. He watched from afar as Lily attended to Bella, who was already proving herself a marauder in her own rights, not allowing a moment's rest for anyone body in the house.

'DADDY,' his son shrieked from the doorway. Blond haired and blue eyed, two year old Jonathan was a quidditch fanatic and even just now, showed incredible talent on the broomstick. Nothing made James prouder. 'Go, go..' he was gesturing wildly at the door, trying to desperately communicate that they should be on their way to the quidditch game.

James grinned and picking Jonathan into his arms, went to greet his wife and daughter goodbye. Bella was wailing again, set off by Jonathan's excitement. His son bent down tentatively to kiss Bella on the forehead, his blonde head contrasting against her dark fuzz. Jonathan then escaped into Lily's arms while James picked up his daughter. Her pink cheeks were smooth and her emerald eyes were glazed with her tears. He kissed her gently and whispered into her ear, 'Goodbye baby.'

He kissed Lily, his lips lingering until Jonathan made further impatient noises and then grabbing his son, James made for the door. The uncomfortable clenching feeling was still in his stomach.

'Remember, anything at all and call me…Sirius will be with me as well,'

Lily merely rolled her eyes at him. 'Keep a hold on Johnny at all times. You know how he gets in crowds… and Johnny, always listen to Daddy, okay.'

Jonathan nodded his head excitedly but James snorted. He knew he had as much control over his son as he had over Lily, which was nothing.

Once outside, he walked just further enough to escape the anti-apparition fields and grabbing Johnny firmly, glanced back at his house. He could faintly make out Lily as she rocked Bella in her arms and most likely singing a lullaby. Still with the faint prickling at the back of his mind, James turned at the spot and disappeared with a crack.

Had he known what he would face upon his return, he would never have gone… But James left and so lived to regret his actions ever since.
