Our Last Night
So what if you can see the darkest side of me?
No one would ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal-Three Days Grace, Animal I Have Become
"You're not crazy, you know," Jacob says to Leah. "Don't worry that it's just you. It's happening to all of us."
It is a few days after Leah has returned to her human form after her first transformation.
Leah glares at Jacob, but lightens her stare as she remembers how Jacob had always helped her when Sam had left.
"I wish this was some kind of dream or something," she whispers. "That I could wake up, and everything will go back to normal. Sam will love me again, my dad will still be alive, and werewolves will be nothing but a myth."
"I'm sorry about your dad, by the way," Jacob says.
Leah shivers slightly. "That would make me feel a lot better if it wasn't my fault," she says.
"It's not your fault, Leah," Jacob says in a comforting tone.
"Oh yeah? Then how do you explain this? My dad dies at the same time I transform." Leah folds her arms over her chest. Despite her obvious anger, Leah is only shaking slightly, not changing into a wolf anytime soon.
"I wish it was a dream too," Jacob whispers, looking at the ground. "Did they tell you about imprinting?" he asks suddenly.
"They tried," Leah answers. "I didn't have enough patience to hear it. But apparently it has something to do with why Sam left me."
"Imprinting is like…finding your soul mate," Jacob says.
"Sounds lovely," Leah says sarcastically.
Jacob grimaces. "Not for you."
"No kidding. So when does it happen? This…imprinting thing."
"There's no set time. It's the first time you see her…er…him after you transform."
Leah rolls her eyes. "Great. And if you don't see them?"
"Then you don't imprint. It's supposed to be rare to imprint."
"So why did my boyfriend have to be the one to imprint?"
Jacob sighs. "Fate is cruel."
Leah raises an eyebrow. "Like I didn't know that already," she says.
"I'm sorry about all of this," Jacob mumbles.
"I don't need your pity," Leah says, turning hard.
"Then I won't give you pity. I'll just be your friend."
"You were my friend, once," Leah says, emphasizing the past tense.
"And why can't I still be?" Jacob asks.
"Because…what does it even mean, to be someone's friend? I just…need some time alone, ok?"
Jacob sighs. "Ok," he agrees half heartedly.
As they slowly walk away from each other, Jacob wonders if Leah will ever accept him as a friend again.
(A/N: I know the ending was kind of iffy, I was just trying to resolve it. One of my ideas for this story was to make it a two shot that involved Jacob and Leah transforming and Jacob accidentally thinking about his feelings for Leah. But I don't have the energy or patience to write more than a one shot right now, so you guys will have to live with this ending.)
