A/N: This takes place after Jane was kidnapped by Hoyt for the first time. Please review! Xx
Jane absentmindedly pushed open the door to the morgue as she read a text from Frankie. She looked up as she announced her presence to Maura, but froze in the doorway at the sight in front of her.
Maura holding a scalpel to the skin of the body lying on the table in front of her.
Now, previously, that wouldn't have bothered her at all. After all, it was standard procedure in an autopsy. But after that night, which culminated in Hoyt pushing his scalpel through her hands, she was no longer as relaxed in the presence of that particular tool.
Jane gasped as she felt the air leaving her lungs, alerting Maura to her distress.
"Are you alright, Jane?" Maura asked, before seeing where Jane's eyes were focused; her right hand, holding the scalpel, which she immediately put out of sight as she rounded the metal table to approach Jane.
But Jane was no longer fully aware of Maura's actions; or indeed, of anything. She could hear the blood rushing through her ears as she took deep, painful rasping breaths to try and force some air into her lungs.
Maura led Jane into her office, away from prying eyes, and pushed her into a chair, before crouching in front of her and placing her hands on Jane's knees.
"I need you to listen to me Jane," Maura said softly. "Can you do that?"
Jane shook her head, trying to find a way to explain that she couldn't breathe, and the lack of oxygen had caused a tingling sensation throughout her body, and her arms and legs had completely locked up to the point that she could no longer move them. But all that came out was a stumbling attempt of a sentence.
"N-n-n-no, n-n-n-n-n, I-I-I-I-I-I c-c-c-c-can't, I-I-I-I-I-I, hurts, help, b-b-b-b-breathe…"
Maura rubbed her hands over Jane's knees.
"Listen to me, Jane," ordered Maura, "I need you to breathe with me. In through your nose for 4 counts, and out through your nose for five counts. Let's try it."
So for the next ten minutes, Maura crouched in front of Jane, repeating, "In through the nose. One, two, three, four. Out through the mouth. One, two, three, four, five."
Gradually, Jane's breathing slowed down, until, although still shaky, it was a lot more even, her limbs had loosened up, and she could now talk again, even though she was still stuttering a bit.
"The-the-the sc-sc-scalpel," Jane said softly as she closed her eyes; embarrassed.
Maura nodded. "I know, I'm sorry, I should have realised."
"I-I can't stop s-s-s-seeing it. All the time."
Maura sat on the arm of the chair and wrapped her arms around Jane, who clutched on to Maura, breathing in the familiar scent of her perfume, as her breathing finally slowed right back down to normal.
"Have you had many of these panic attacks?" Maura asked gently.
Jane shook her head. "I had one a-at the hospital, b-b-but none after that. N-not until today."
Maura sighed. "Maybe for the time being, it might be a good idea to let me know when you're coming down. As much as I like your surprise visits, they may not be good for you right now."
Jane nodded and tightened her arms around Maura's waist. "M-m-maybe you could surprise me f-from t-t-t-t-time to time then?"
Maura smiled and kissed the top of her head. "I think I could do that."
A/N: I suffer from panic attacks quite regularly, and this is what happens to me, right down to the stuttering. Please review – I hope you enjoyed reading it!
