THE SNOW COMING DOWN
It was snowing again.
I was left alone in the Western Palace, with Jaken and the servants.
My favorite place in the Palace is the building that has windows for walls. It is a delicate glass house situated in the lush gardens, close to Sesshomaru's quarters. I always come here when it snows - it is beautiful to watch the snow come down, burying the plants in the garden...
As I sit here, by the large windows, I noticed that it will soon be dark. I sighed, drawing patterns on the glass.
"Why the long sigh, Rin?" came a crisp voice.
I turn my head quickly to see a flash of silver. Of course it is him. Sneaky as always.
"Sesshomaru, I did not hear you come in." said I.
"Hn." came his standard response.
In a flash, he is sitting by me, his long silver locks flying after him and his keen golden eyes inspecting me.
I looked back outside the window, to watch the snow come down endlessly.
"It never stops, does it..." I made a casual observation.
His eyes, which were upon me still, shifts to the snow for a second, and then focuses on me again.
"You are being careless in not wearing your thicker kimonos, Rin." He chided, training his eyes on me, as though trying to figure out a puzzle.
I give a small smile, still watching the snow outside and never once looking at his face.
"It snows through everything - the sun, the moon, the stars..." I go on.
"Did Jaken behave today?" He asked, as though testing the waters.
"The snow is oblivious to everything." I said, in a mellow voice.
"Did you have a chance to plant those seeds I brought you from the Southern Lands?" asked Sesshomaru more insistently, his eyes peering at me still.
"The snow is impossible." I said, firmly.
Sesshomaru turned his eyes away from me, watching the snow as well.
Then he said slowly. "Perhaps the snow is not to blame. The snow is doing only what it must and although it may appear to be dull and droll, it is doing its best..." He said.
I looked to him for the first time, surprised. He slowly turned his eyes towards me, a neutral expression on his face.
"But does the snow not understand how unsettling it is sometimes?" I inquired, helplessly.
He said nothing.
"So unsettling that it is lonely, so lonely that it is boring, so boring that it is unhappy..." I went on, my eyes tearing up.
He looked at me still.
"The snow is helpless and lost." He admitted.
I smiled.
"Does the snow want some advice then?" I asked, tearfully.
He trained his eyes on me.
"Please let the snow take the sun with it. The sun will melt the snow's enemies and keep the snow warm." I said, smiling.
Sesshomaru's eyes look brighter for a second and amusement ran through them. His hands reached out to mine.
"Indeed." He said, drawing me closer to him.
Together we watched the snow come down.
THE END
