Happy Nightmare

"Claus."

"What is it, Lucas? Why are you still awake?"

The blonde twin tossed the heavy blankets away and swung his legs over the side of his bed.

"Claus, I had a bad dream," The timid boy whispered through the darkness.

"A nightmare?"

"Yeah."

Lucas sifted through the darkness without outstretched hands. Upon feeling that he had reached Claus's mattress, he tentatively sat down on it. Lucas bent over with his head low, pressing the palms of his hands over his wet eyes. His body quivered as he let out a little, silent sob, biting his lip and trying not to bawl. He hated how weak he was, being scared by a dream.

It wasn't even real.

Claus sat up and shifted over to Lucas, linking arms with his dear twin brother. He pulled Lucas close and they leaned on each other, one crying and the other consoling.

"It'll be okay," Claus instinctively breathed as he rocked his sibling back and forth. He barely even knew what was wrong with Lucas, aside from the timid boy having had a nightmare. But he ensured his brother that there would be a safe future, even if he had no way of proving it.

Gosh, it sure must have been a terrible dream if it could make Lucas cry so much.

The boy stopped sobbing eventually, and just let himself be held in his twin's arms.

"Claus…I'm sorry," Lucas sighed.

Claus almost laughed, "I'm always here for you, Lucas. Gosh, it's really okay, don't worry about anything."

"But this is the third time this week that I've come to you and cried because of some dumb dream!"

Claus silently shook his head at Lucas.

The boys sat together in the soft darkness of their bedroom for what felt like a long time, until Lucas gently pushed himself away.

"I'm sorry of how much I rely on you."

"Lucas, we're kids! Kid brothers, twins even! It's okay; we're supposed to be here for each other!"

"…"

Lucas silently turned his back to Claus.

"Lucas," Claus started.

The timid blonde boy was crying again now, round teardrops falling from his pale eyes.

"Claus! I-I-I'm really sorry!" Lucas called out. He turned to Claus and threw himself at the boy again, clinging and choking through fresh sobs.

"Lu…cas…" Claus furrowed his brow and sighed. He held his crybaby of a twin brother nonetheless, though. He kissed the top of Lucas's head as the blonde cried and blubbered into Claus's chest. Gradually Lucas calmed down and cried less, his breathing a little more steady.

"What was the dream even about, Lucas?"

Lucas stopped crying completely and fell silent, just clinging to Claus's pajama shirt. He pulled away just enough to look up at his brother.

"It was really bad. A really, really bad dream."

"Bad like how?"

"Bad…like…uhm…" Lucas looked away as his voice drifted off.

"Lucas?" Claus gently nudged his sibling, "What's wrong?"

Lucas just sniffled.

"Ah, oh, you don't have to tell me," Claus smiled at his brother, "Now come on, it's really late! Let's sleep."

He moved back into bed and pulled Lucas along with him. Lucas willingly came, of course, and clung to his brother, glad and grateful to be able to sleep in the comfort of Claus's arms.

Lucas, however, couldn't be fully comforted by even his brother's steady and gentle nature.

He was too busy replaying that dream over and over and over in his mind, because it was a dream where Lucas had finally kissed Claus with romantic intentions and Claus kissed back, and they were happy.

He was too occupied with these taboo thoughts to sleep.

Siblings can't fall in love.

Not brothers, not sisters, and most certainly not twins.
