Chapter One
It's funny how one Autumn can change everything. It must be something about the crisp freshness of fallen leaves and the sound of children laughing, fresh cut grass and dark evenings, asphalt sizzling after late night thunderstorms and the slight billowing of trees in the breeze while rain gently patters on the ground. Something about the long, happy days and whirring heaters and waterproof wellies from the local shoe store thwacking down the street. Something about Winter being so close, another year, another Christmas, another fresh start. So much in just one season, stirring up like storms that crest at the end of each day leaving everything gasping and cool with the scent of fresh dust and wet grass. Everybody can reach back to a place in their life, one month, one season, one year, and lay a finger on it, finding that one exact point where your life changed. That Autumn was mine.
The day my mum left my dad was up at 5am; I remember looking at the haunted expression that plagued my dads face as he watched her slam the front door of our tiny semi for the last time. With that final slam, a crack appeared in the door, running deep into the foundation. Just like it did through Charlies heart.
8 Years Later
Lights. Lights blurring through my vision, conquering the darkness. Keep my eyes open, whatever I do, I have to keep my eyes open.
I was bleeding. Blood was pouring from the wound in my shoulder, soaking through my clothes and painting my skin red.
I had to keep running.
Rain began to fall with a gentle patter, cooling my flesh. My breath coming in short, sharp gasps now, were weakening; my legs growing numb. All the energy I had left was focused towards the steady pounding of my feet hitting the ground beneath me in a rythmic pattern.
Nearly There.
I started to search for something without really knowing what it was. The darkness of the cold night was destorting my vision. My shoulder was filled to the brim with hot, liquid pain as flashes of reds and gold exploded like fireworks behind my eyes with ever footstep.
I never knew it was possible to actually see pain. But through those unimaginable moments, I swear I could. It felt like the whole ocean was inside my head. Wave after wave of pain crashing against my skull.
I was so, so close.
My eyes began to droop as I ran, energy was literally draining out of me. I fell. My knees scraping against the pavement. I tried to put my hands in front of my face at a feeble attempt of protection but they were heavier than lead.
I lay there. Watching as darkness crept towards me, closer and closer in a heavy black mist.
I was going to die. After all of this. I was going to die alone on a dark stone floor, in a pool of my own bright red blood.
My leg twitched as a final movement before my eyes shut and the darkness enclosed.
The last thing I heard, other than the billowing of country wind and the patter of tiny raindrops, was a voice that rang like heaven.
Oh good, I thought, I'm not going to die alone.
