Nebilim's Sick Day
Nephry, in a pink and very poofy dress, pouted from the large couch as she watched the boys argue. Honestly, couldn't they just get over themselves? It really was all Jade's fault; if he could just be a character that Saphir could get along with or even talk to, then Saphir wouldn't have thrown a tantrum in the first place. If only Professor Nebilim weren't sick, then they could go back to school. Unfortunately, she had a very bad cold and carried handkerchiefs around with her wherever she wandered, her eyes red rimmed and her silver hair unusually lank. She would have continued teaching, only Peony, eyes large as she coughed her way through another math lesson, insisted that she get her bed rest.
"But I wanted to be Christine!" Saphir cried, scowling face hidden beneath the large mustache that Jade had declared perfect for an Opera house owner.
"I told you, Christine is a girl. Why would you want to be a girl?" From her vantage point on the couch Nephry could see that her brother was reaching the end of his very short patience. His cape was dragging on the ground, slightly-off kilter because Dist had been clawing at it in an effort to draw attention, and his mask had fallen down to reveal that there was no horrifying scar behind, only a pair of box-frame glasses.
"I think it's quite fitting, actually." Peony drawled, moving to sit on the couch beside Nephry. She shifted away from him, not appreciating how he was treating Saphir, who was now looking pathetically close to tears. He leaned in, whispering, "You look beautiful, though, it'd be a shame to give that dress up to Saphir," as his hand moved to catch hers. Red-faced, she scooted to the furthest part of the couch, fully aware that Jade was watching them behind his mask even though he had righted it.
Saphir, looking up from his temper tantrum to see what had Jade so engrossed, noted Nephry's tomato-esque face, and curiously asked, "Peony, what did you do to Nephry?"
"Yes, what indeed." Jade murmured, attempting to adjust his glasses through the mask. Saphir giggled, and Jade glared. The effect was somewhat ruined by his black cloak catching at his ear.
Nephry sighed. "I don't know how we'll ever pull off a surprise act of Scene one for the Professor if you all keep goofing off. At this rate, she'll get better before we even start reading lines."
"I still don't want to be the Opera House Owner!" Dist mumbled, shuffling his feet.
"You can be the Prima Donna," Peony suggested, once again too barbed a comment for Nephry's taste. Jade smirking back at the blond was the final straw.
"I'm leaving!" Peony's face fell visibly, and, ignoring his protests, she flounced to the door. "We're not going to get anything done here. I hope you all had fun mocking Saphir and putting on stupid costumes."
"You said you liked my Raoul costume!" Peony protested.
"It's stupid now that you're in it," she said coolly, adding, "I'm going to go see the Professor," as she walked out the door.
Peony, disheartened, bristled as Saphir laughed and began to ominously advance on him. "Laugh it up --"
"Leave him alone, come on."
"You don't think she's really mad at me?" Peony asked, painfully casual.
"She gets mad about a lot of things, does it matter?" Jade countered. Peony nodded thoughtfully, ignoring Saphir, who had decided that if he couldn't be Raoul or the Phantom, he'd just stealthily take out the braids in Peony's hair. "Let's just go see Professor Nebilim," Jade suggested, also ignoring the younger boy. They left, Saphir hurrying to catch up.
AN: I, UH...Yes, I did just subtly sneak Phantom of the Opera into a video game fic. Oh so subtly. This was also on LJ, durr I'm such a comment ho.
