Just some scraps I wrote after watching the anime. I felt that Kaoru's issues about losing his brother were left horribly unresolved. I'm only near the beginning of the manga so I'm hoping they'll do a better job.

"Hikaru?"

"Yes Kaoru?"

"What's going on between you and Haruhi?"

"Nothing. Not since Tamaki… y'know."

"Oh… okay."

"Why?"

"Just wondering."

Maybe it's selfish but I'm happy even though Hikaru is sad. Tamaki and Haruhi might be good for each other and if Haruhi has Tamaki then I can keep my brother a little longer.

"Kaoru – do you love Haruhi?"

"No. You and Tamaki love Haruhi."

"Who do you love?"

"Who says I love anyone?"

"Everyone loves somebody. Mori-senpai loves looking after Honey-sempai. Honey-senpai loves cake and cute things. Kyoyo-senpai loves making bargins."

"Those are things. Maybe everybody loves something but not everybody loves someone."

"But – everybody must love someone otherwise the numbers wouldn't work out."

"Huh?"

"Every somebody that doesn't love someone makes somebody who nobody loves…"

"Ha. Don't be an idiot Hikaru. It doesn't work like that."

"What do you mean?"

"Well think about it, you and Tamaki-senpai both love Haruhi-chan. So that would mean Haruhi is getting more than her fair share. But some people like Tamaki can love more than one person so they can give to more people. There are people everybody loves and there are people that nobody loves at all."

"But that's not fair!"

"I know. That's part of why Tamaki-senpai has the host club. To make sure all the women in the school get a fair share of his love. Even though I think Haruhi gets the biggest share of all."

"So that host club makes things right then!"

"I suppose it does."
