the story begins in a prison cell , gumball watterson is waiting inside when the prison bell begins to chime , and gumball reflects on his past life and realizes it's about to end as he has been sentenced to death and is going to be hanged when the clock strikes 5 , at some point , the priest comes to read him the last rites , and as he does so , gumball looks through the bars of his cell 1 last time for the last sights of a world that has gone very wrong for him , but he feels as if there was a error and can't stop the fear from overcoming him , and he feels that this is nothing but a dream , and he's afraid , so he screams , but he's so scared that he can't speak , and he begins crying , but wonders why he's crying , as he's not afraid of death , at 5:00 , the guards come and march him to the courtyard , and while he's walking , a inmate says to him "god be with you" , causing gumball to question the existence of god , wondering why he has suddenly let him go and why he won't save him , and as he continues onward , his life drifts before him , and when he reaches the courtyard , he is taken up to the gallows pole , where the executioner places the noose around gumball's neck , and when he is asked if he has any last words before his execution , he says "hallowed be thy name" , and he is hanged , and gumball's family , who had attended gumball's execution , bow their heads in sorrow , and exit the place when everybody else does
