TAKING THE PAIN AWAY

Arlington National Cemetery

It hurts.

Sometimes the pain was too much. Sometimes she just wanted to die. She needed someone to take her pain away, she needed her husband, the man she loved.

It was like her heart and soul had died but her body was still alive.

She wasn't anymore.

The day she had lost him she had lost herself too.

The day he had died she had died too.

Meg kneeled in front of his gravestone, her tears wetting the ground in front of it. Her fingertips brushed over the inscription which said: Harmon Rabb junior.

There were days when she needed him, and some days she didn't but most of the time she wished he was here by her side.

"I need you. I can't live my life without you. Please come back and take me with you. Take this pain away. Please. Now you belong to heaven and I? I belong to you. For so many years we were friends and yes I always knew what we could do. I knew you loved me, we both knew and now, now I am alone again. How am I supposed to live without you. How am I supposed to carry on when all that I am living for is gone" she said out loud, not talking to anyone in general.

After a while Meg stood up and went home alone.

Meg woke up because she had heard something.

As she sat up in bed, she saw a shadow moving in the corner.

Her hand wandered under the pillow where her gun was lying.

"Don't move, I am armed" she said.

"Don't be afraid" a voice said, a voice she knew very well.

It was the voice that had talked to her at night, that had whispered loving words into her ear on their weddingday, it was the voice of her beloved lost husband.

"Who are you?"

"Meg, you don't remember your own husband?" he asked and stepped out of the shadow.

"God Harm" Meg was afraid and surprised.

What did it mean?

Harm was dead, for two years he was dead and now he was standing in the middle of their bedroom.

Tears ran down her cheeks and a moment later Harm was standing in front of her.

"Don't cry" he said and brushed away some tears.

Meg flung herself into his arms. She was happy to have him back or was it just a dream? Meg didn't really care. She was happy that he was there. Nothing else counted that moment.

"So many times I have prayed for one more day with you, for you to come back and take me with you. Harm I can't live without you. I would rather die then live without you" she admitted.

"Don't say such a thing. You have so much to live for. Meg, it isn't your time. One day we will be reunited again" Harm said.

"Don't leave me" she begged.

"I have to."

"But I need you."

Harm was silent for a moment, he looked at her.

"Stay, just tonight, hold me, like you have always done it, give me something to live for" she begged.

He nodded and moments later they were lying cocooned in each others arms.

Then, Harm leaned forward and kissed her.

She responded, her tongue fighting for entrance.

His hands roamed over her body, memorizing every part of it.

Clothes were opened, pushed aside or discarded according to a need of two people, when husband and wife came together in a dance as old as humankind.

Later

Harm looked at his sleeping wife, one last time. Meg had a smile on her face, the same he fell in love with, the same which could light up a whole room.

"The next time I come back to you, I will take you with me" he softly said before he faded away.

Harm was right, 30 years later she saw him again in the corner of their bedroom and in the morning her daughter found her, dead.
