Birds Of A Feather
By SMYGO4EVA

Mitsuru was always by Nanami; he felt that he had to be there for her and that it was his responsibility to do so. He felt as if in any shape of form, he had to be there for Nanami or otherwise she wouldn't survive Ohtori Academy. She would be a complete wreck without him, and that knowledge made him wake up in the morning, giving him a reason for living, besides for becoming a great duelist like Nanami and her brother Touga, one who he longs to be exactly like.

How he envied Touga, the Student Council President, the Adonis of every girl's dreams and Nanami's brother, who she romanticizes as the ideal man. He could only wish that he would be her brother and no one else, so he would protect her from potential threats and fight her battles so she would never get hurt. A man can dream, as they say, and Mitsuru can only stand by for her and take her treatment, showing only that he was her companion and nothing else. Without her, he would be nothing, just a shell, just a thing with no purpose in life, forever trapped in the cage that he built for himself.

Nanami herself would never know of Mitsuru's affection, as she treated him nothing more than her servant, her companion, and her obligated friend. She thought that the boy would simply be a toy to play with, just until she would be along with her brother's status and simply toss him away. Alas, she simply saw him as the perfect playmate that fit her status and the perfect doll, someone who would fulfill her schemes that would be in her name. She never really knew what she was without him, and she wouldn't know what she would be without her dear brother.

She was the sister of the adored Touga, a remarkable duelist in the Academy, while she had won her better duels, and Mitsuru would go to the ends of the Earth for her, just so he would be close to her. It was rather flattering, really, but she never knew if she would be of use for him. She never knew who she really was, unless she became a bird, a bird that was free of the cruel cage of doubt and hatred, and flies the winds in the means of finding her own destiny.

Unbeknownst to them, Nanami and Mitsuru are in the same place of worth and existence. Perhaps they would soon learn that they were birds as well, who would be together and more alike than they thought. After all, birds of a feather flock together.
